Caribou’s 150th Celebration Committee has announced it has organized a sub-committee which will write a unique historical book, bringing together the people, foods and the events that have shaped the community over the past 150 years. This commemorative book will contain three sections including ten chapters of history, 50 pages of food recipes and a section featuring individuals and families that have made both small and large contributions resulting in the improvement of the Caribou community. Each chapter will cover a span of 15 years of history.
As in so many communities, food has often brought residents together; around the kitchen table, a formal dinner at the holidays or a community potluck supper. With this in mind, the book will feature 50 pages of recipes from the Unitarian Universalist Church Ladies Aid cookbook. This women’s group has published seven cookbooks with the first publication occurring in 1907. In honor of the 150th Celebration, the Ladies Aid has agreed to allow the committee to select recipes depicting how the foods eaten have changed over the years.
The third section of the historical volume focuses on the people who have made a contribution to the Caribou community. According to committee members, this section serves two purposes. One is to give everyone an opportunity to bring to light the contributions a person or a family has made during the past 150 years.
Secondly, in order to defray the cost of publishing the book, this is a fundraiser for the 150th Celebration Committee. The committee members are seeking donations of $100 to list a biography of Caribou citizens featured in the book.
Application forms are available online at www.celebratecaribou.com. A January 31, 2009 deadline for applications has been established.
Citizens of Caribou are encouraged to bring to light those that have contributed to the success of the community over the last 150 years.
