Three northern Maine nursing and rehabilitation facilities, all owned by the Cyr family, have received a five-star rating from the federal government. A five-star quality rating means the facility operates “much above average” and nationwide only 7.2 percent of facilities received the rating. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the five-star rating system of the nation’s nearly 16,000 nursing homes recently. Caribou and Presque Isle Rehab and Nursing Centers, along with Katahdin Nursing Home in Millinocket, were some of the few that received a perfect rating.
The ratings are based on complex data drawn from state inspections and reports on staffing and other measures provided by the nursing homes. The overall rating was influenced by how well homes scored on staffing and on 10 quality measures, including how well a home responds to residents' declining mobility, high-risk bedsores and pain.
Overall, Maine nursing homes fared well in the rating system compared to other states. According to USA Today, about 23 percent of Maine nursing home received a five-star rating, ranking Maine facilities third in the nation behind Alaska and Delaware. Alaska, New Hampshire, Maine, Hawaii and Alabama topped the five-star list, having at least 20 percent of their homes in that category.
The Cyr family is proud to be among those nursing facilities offering superior care to patients.
“We’ve always known that we operate exceptional facilities; we’ve always been diligent because we care about our patients,” said Phil Cyr, administrator for Caribou Rehab and Nursing Center and owner of the Katahdin Nursing Home. “Our staff is completely dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality health care to its residents, and it is so gratifying to receive recognition for our efforts.”
Cyr appreciates the analogy of the Cyr facilities’ successful scoring to a “hat trick.” If someone scores a "hat trick" in hockey, it means that a player has scored three goals in one game.
The recognition would not be possible without the staff, said Cyr.
"We would especially like to thank our staff at all of our locations for their hard work and dedication. They make our facilities the very best they can be,” said Cyr.
