• Mr. Bancroft of Mass., Roy Libby, Luther Hall and Ernest returned from a successful hunting trip to Squa Pan. Ernest Hall, a lad of 12 years was the first one of the party to shoot a deer.
LORING AIR FORCE BASE 1958 — Five of 7 men aboard died when a huge KC-135 refueling strato-tanker crashed into the woods near a runway at LAFB.
• Mrs. C.V. King who has been visiting with her daughters, Mrs. W.P Hamilton and Mrs. W.E. Sincock has returned to her home in Fort Fairfield.
• The following officers have been elected by the Modern Woodmen Lodge: Consult, H.E. Bell; Advisor, G.B. Burgess; Banker, E.F. Shaw; Clerk, A.A. Garden; Escort, H.L. Jewell; Watchman, J.A. McNeal; Sentry, H. Harris; Physicians, Drs. G.C. Upham and S.D. Little; and manager for three years, Eugene Theriault.
• W.J. Bishop of Woodland raised 3,000 barrels of potatoes from 126 acres this year.
• During the month of November, the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad shipped 1,227,950 bushels of potatoes.
• Potatoes are at $1.65 per barrel.
• Mona Kelley and Elizabeth Drake, students at the Aroostook State Normal School spent Thanksgiving in town.
• Stirling Shaw and Stuart K. Stairs started for Boston by motor recently to bring back a new car for the Standard Oil Company branch in Caribou.
• In comparing the grades of Limestone boys who were out for athletics last year and those not reporting, the athletes ranks were higher.
• Frank James has purchased a new driving horse.
• Mrs. Mabel Watson, Worthy Master of Limestone Grange and W. B. Ward went to Boston to attend the State Grange.
• The real winter weather which began about a month earlier than last year was further emphasized Wednesday by a snowstorm which left nearly a foot of the white element all over the northern part of the county.
• The Caribou School Building Committee, comprised of members of the Town Council and School Board accepted a report on a survey and will go ahead with plans for an 18-room elementary school for 1960 with a second 18-room unit for 1965. Also considered was a 10-room junior high which is expected to be needed in 1967.
• Gov. Edmund S. Muskie was in a jovial mood as he opened his address at the Hotel Caribou, but his talk soon was in a serious vein as he called for the abolishment of the Executive Council and a firm, measured program of progress for Maine.
• Mr. and Mrs. Norman Holts entertained Malcolm Holts, Frances Holts, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford McIntire and Jean Holts for Thanksgiving Day.
• Word has been received that a Caribou serviceman, Coast Guardsman Paul V. Murphy, 23, stationed at San Pedro, Calif. was responsible for saving the lives of three survivors of an overturned and sinking sailboat off Long Beach.
• Johnny and Joyce Hedman, twin children of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hedman, celebrated their eighth birthday with an after school party.
• The USO Volunteers served supper to 95 serviceman and their dependents Sunday evening.
• Nearly 600 youngsters enjoyed lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus at the Caribou Rec. Center.
• On Jan. 1, 1984, Caribou’s new municipal ambulance service is expected to be in operation, somewhat ahead of schedule.
• Scott Hunter, a freshman at Colby College has been named a Mayflower Hill Scholar. He is the son of Nancy and Dwight Hunter of Caribou.
• Guests on Thanksgiving Day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Sodergren of Stockholm, were Mr. and Mrs. Ejnar Adamson and Mrs. Adeline Doucette.
• Pam and Adrian McQuade of Woodland, spent Thanksgiving Day with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse McBreairty.
• Staff Sergeant Randy D. Peterson, sons of Dale C. and Paula R. Peterson of Caribou, has completed a strategic microwave systems course at the U.S. Army Signal School at Fort Gordon, Ga. Peterson is a 1974 CHS graduate.
1958— Brian Rogers gets up in the air for a push shot for Caribou during the home teams’ first-quarter scoring spree against the Stearns Minutemen. Stearns clipped the Vikings 86-62, before 1,500 fans.
