Grades 5 & 6 Basketball Registration
    Registration for the grades 5 and 6 basketball program will be held at the William V. Haskell Community Center. Registration has now begun for residents and non residents.     The program offers leagues for both boys and girls.
    Practices and games will be held weekdays after school at the community center. The registration fee is $15.
    Contact the recreation office at 764-2545 for more information.
Youth Open Gym
The Presque Isle Recreation & Parks Department has begun its youth open gym.
    Hours will be from 1-3 p.m. for elementary youth and from 3-5 p.m. for middle & high school students. These hours will be offered regularly each Saturday and Sunday.
    Available will be a pool table, table tennis, bumper pool, foosball, board games, a lounge with TV and a gymnasium for basketball and other activities.
Christmas Vacation Activities
    The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will be offering a plethora of activities for the week after Christmas.
    All activities will take place at the recreation center unless otherwise noted.
    Pre-registration is REQUIRED for the snow tubing trip. All other programs welcome drop ins and have no fee.
    In addition to the special programs there will be extra open gym hours each day except Thursday. Hours will be from 1-3 p.m. for elementary children and 3-5 p.m. for junior high and high school children. Extra events are as follows:
    Monday: Still having Olympic withdrawals from the Beijing Games? You’re in luck. Come take a shot at our Extreme Decathlon. This program runs from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for children grades 1-6.
    Activities include balance beam pillow fight, fox and hounds, cup stacking, head stands, shuttle run, Superman jump, dizzy bat scooter relay, timed jump rope, leg wrestling, and bean bag toss. Come try your best at any or all of the events to see if you can become an extreme decathlete.
    Tuesday: Back by popular demand is Wii Day. Keeping with the Olympic theme, we’ll be offering a Mario vs. Sonic: Beijing Games tournament. Time permitting, there will also be a MarioKart racing circuit. This event is from 10-11:30 a.m. for grades 4-8.
    Immediately following Wii Day will be a gym game extravaganza. From 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. children in grades 1-6 can come play capture the flag, rafter ball, and dodge ball.
    Wednesday: A bus will be leaving the center at 9:15 a.m. to bring kids to Big Rock for a morning of snow tubing. This is open for children grades 5-8 and pre-registration is a must as there is a waiver form to sign. We should return around 12:30 pm and the cost is $10 per child.
    Thursday: Happy New Year!!! The office will be closed.
    Friday: We’ll be kicking off 2009 with a bang! We’ll start the morning off bright and early at 9:30 a.m. with another round of gym games as explained above.         This will lead us to the ever popular Contest Day at 11 a.m. This is for grades 1-6 and will go until we’re done, which may slightly run into open gym. No worries though, since the kids can stay for that too.
    Games for contest day include ping-pong, pop-a-shot, checkers, connect four, and archery.
    If you need to relax after all that gaming, the indoor pool is offering a Dollar Day from 1:00-2:45 pm for all Presque Isle residents.
Rec Winter Olympics
    No school? No problem. Come on down to the center on January 16th for the Rec. Winter Olympics.
    Take part in the Extreme Decathlon and Mario vs. Sonic Olympic Games. From 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for grades 1-6 with open gym to follow.
Archery
    The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is offering an archery program for youth and adults on Sundays from 6-8:30 p.m. This is an informal, drop-in program with a $6 fee for each night of shooting.
    Participants may bring their own equipment, and there will be some available for those whom do not have equipment.
Adult and evening programs
    The Presque Isle Recreation & Parks Department has announced that its adult and evening schedule of activities have begun.
    Co-ed dodgeball will be held on Mondays from 7-9 p.m., men’s basketball will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m., and co-ed volleyball will be held on Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. Archery will be starting the first Sunday in December.
    All activities will be held at the William V. Haskell Community Center. The fee is $1 per person per night. Participants should be at least 18 years of age and out of high school to participate.

    If your child has had their team picture taken and you would like an electronic copy, please email adampirec@maine.rr.com with your child’s name, sport, and team name.
LeBlanc’s Family Karate
    The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department now hosts LeBlanc’s Family Karate Saturday mornings. Classes are for ages 7 and up, and classes will be run from 9-11 am every Saturday.
    The classes are designed for beginners and intermediate students. The cost is $30 per month and family rates are available. There is also a one time fee of $25 per student.

Laser Tag
    The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will be hosting Laser Tag on Friday, Jan. 2nd, from 6-8 p.m.
    This is open to ages 10 and up. The cost for the two hours is $10, and people can pay $5 for one hour of play. Please email adampirec@maine.rr.com with any questions or concerns.
Parent/Toddler Sign Language
    The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will be hosting a parent/toddler signing playgroup Saturdays from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
    The group will meet the first Saturday of each month.
    This group is designed to teach children basic signs as a means of communication at an earlier age.  The cost is $2 per child per session. The group is designed for children up to age 6, but all ages may come and join in the fun.
