CARIBOU – Caribou hosted the third annual Lion’s Invitational Little League Tournament the weekend of July 26 and 27.
The Caribou All-Stars, Fort Fairfield, Houlton, Madawaska and Caribou Hydroblend competed in the 9- and 10-year-old division. Houlton, Madawaska, Mapleton/Presque Isle, the Caribou All-Stars and the Caribou Cavaliers competed in the 11- and 12-year-old division.
In the second championship game for the 9- and 10-year-old division title, the Caribou All-Stars jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and held on for an 8-7 win over Houlton on Sunday. Houlton forced the second game with an 8-4 victory earlier in the afternoon
Michael Hunter went two-for-three at bat and scored two runs including the game-winning run off a ground ball by Mason Huck. Tyler Dombroski, Justin Ouellette and Huck had two hits each. Nick Frost and Axios Gerakaris notched singles for Caribou.
In the first game, Houlton prevailed by a score of 8-4. Houlton defense frustrated Caribou’s hitters to preserve the win.
Caribou made a charge in the sixth inning led by Frost’s bases-clearing triple. Frost later scored on an errant throw to close the lead to 8-4. Ouellette added two hits and a run. Donovan Savage, Dombroski and Hunter Milliard all had hits for Caribou.
The All-Stars downed Fort Fairfield 13-2, Houlton 7-6 and Madawaska 11-8 to go undefeated into the championship games.
In the Fort Fairfield game, Reece McDougal belted three hits while Hunter and Huck had two hits each. Jillian Flynn, Savage and Frost all had one hit each. Savage and Hunter combined for 11 strikeouts.
In the Houlton game, Hunter smashed a triple for two runs and scored himself to gain the lead for Caribou. Hunter went four-for-four at bat including two doubles and a single. Frost had two singles, and Dombroski and Flynn each added a base hit.
In the Madawaska game, Huck had two hits and two runs; Milliard had two hits; and Hunter, Ouellette, Dombroski and McDougal had one hit each. Dombroski picked up the pitching win.
The 11- and 12-year-old All-Stars also won their age division by defeating Madawaska 6-1. The All-Stars defeated Houlton twice, 7-5 and 3-1, for the title.
