Phillip Vernon Leavitt

The veterans of Lister-Knowlton, VFW Post 9389, take great pleasure in honoring Phillip Vernon Leavitt,    1st lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII. Born in Limestone, in 1917, (soon to celebrate his 91st birthday), he served our country with pride.

In 1941, Leavitt was selected to serve in the infantry, but as his test scores were so high, it was decided the Air Corp needed him more than the infantry.
Leavitt underwent combat training on Pt-19s, B-13s and B-26s.It was during this time that he was promoted to 2nd Lt. Following his training, he and his crew were sent to Savannah, Ga. to pick up a new B-26 and later flew to Europe.
Leavitt, with his crew members endured 35 missions from England, France and Belgium. He was promoted to 1st Lt. and discharged in July, 1945.
After returning to Caribou, Leavitt bought a home on the River Road, where he lives still, with his daughters. Following his military service he worked for 38 years at Loring Air Force Base.
“Vernon Phillip Leavitt, we the members of Post 9389 are proud to salute you.”
