Obama’s stand on issues questioned

To the editor:
Barack Obama will be the 44th President of the United States. I congratulate him on his historic achievement. Although I am truly happy to see our country break down this racial barrier, it troubles me that Obama succeeded in utterly hoodwinking many voters into choosing him. Obama won Aroostook County by 10 points (54 percent to 44 percent). What I don’t understand is that nearly every person I know in the County who identifies themselves as a Democrat, is conservative on most issues. It’s a paradox that exists in my own family. My father has been a staunch Democrat his entire life, but when I query his opinion, issue by issue, his answers are clearly conservative.
I wonder if you 54 percent of County voters that voted for President-Elect Obama agree with him that:
• Infants born alive after a botched late-term abortion should be left to die on an operating room table. I wonder how you would feel if that was your grandchild?
• Coal-fired power plants should be taxed into bankruptcy via a “Cap and Trade” policy that would assess “Carbon Offset Taxes” on that industry. This would also snare the wood-fired plants in Maine. Perhaps you don’t pay enough for your utility bill already.
• If you apply yourself and work hard, achieving a completely arbitrary level of financial success, you should then be penalized for that success by paying higher income taxes so that those dollars can be “shared” with lower income earners who have the same opportunity to apply themselves and work hard. That “sharing” will not be in the form of lower tax rates, but rather in the form of a check which one could draw a straight line from you to the government to them. Perhaps those of you who think you will never be in the category, “Winners of life’s lottery”, should wonder why anyone would wish to be. I’ve heard many of you say that it’s not worth making more money because you have to pay higher taxes. What a sad reality that was just made worse.
• It’s OK to serve and associate with someone (William Ayers) whose terrorist organization bombed the Pentagon! It’s OK to praise said terrorist’s views on socialist education curricula by writing a glowing blurb for his book. It’s OK to kick off your political career by having a “coming out” party in this livingroom. After being acquitted on a technicality, Ayers is quoted as saying “Guilty as sin and free as a bird. What a great country”.
• It’s OK to worship at a church for 20 years where the pastor believes the AIDS virus was created by the United States Government to kill black people! The same government that Obama will now lead.
• The United States, after achieving military and political victory in Iraq, should simply leave, rather than secure that victory.
• The Constitution is a flawed document that needs to be fixed, not followed.
If you didn’t think this was the person you were voting for, then shame on you for not listening to him and allowing yourself to get caught up in the media frenzy, George Bush hatred, or both. If you knew all these things (and many more that could fill these pages) and still voted for him, then just shame on you. You and I do not wish to live in the same America.
