Owl golfers tops in Sunrise

Men’s soccer team earns 2 wins in New York
    The UMPI golf team won the Sunrise Conference championship Sunday, earning a berth in an NAIA national qualifying tournament to be held next spring.
The Owls totaled 375 strokes to defeat UM-Fort Kent and Vermont Tech, which each came in with scores of 395.

UMPI’s Brett Hooper was the medalist with a 72. He also earned conference rookie of the year honors and headed up the all-conference golf team, which also included UMFK’s Andy Martin and Pat Deane and Vermont Tech’s Kyle Mohan, Eric Warren and Chris Lacroix.
The UM-Presque Isle soccer teams made the trip to upstate New York for weekend matches against Paul Smith College and SUNY-Canton.
The Owl men earned a sweep of the doubleheader, besting Paul Smith College Saturday and SUNY-Canton Sunday.
On Saturday, Josh Peaslee notched a hat trick in a 6-0 win. Devon Peaslee had a goal and an assist, while Tony Hibbard also tallied a goal. Corey Fournier pitched in with two assists and Chris Smith notched another.
It took double overtime, but UMPI prevailed over SUNY-Canton the following afternoon, 2-1. Josh Peaslee netted the game-winning goal off a Fournier assist. Devon Peaslee scored the Owls’ other goal off a Hibbard assist in the second half.
The Owls are now 7-2-1 in conference play and 10-4-1 overall.
The UMPI women beat Paul Smith College, 7-2, behind two goals by Erin Pelletier. Desiree Smith, Victoria Tracy, Carolynn Tuck and Amber Bradley also scored for the Lady Owls.
On Sunday, the Owl women fell to the undefeated SUNY-Canton squad, 5-0. Niki Perkins and Justine Monahan had two goals each for the winners. Billie Martin and Tuck combined for four saves on 13 shots in goal for UMPI, now 6-3-1 in the conference and 9-4-2 overall.
The Collegiate State Cross Country Championships took place Saturday, with the UMPI women placing eighth and the UMPI men ninth in the overall rankings.
Hannah Smith was 67th in the women’s competition to lead the Lady Owls. Her time was 22:08.9 on the five-kilometer course. Teammate Shelley Hanson was 79th in 22:43.95. Colby College and Bowdoin College were first and second, respectively, in the team results.
The Owls’ Justin Fereshetian ran the men’s 8K course in 28:15.25, good for 34th place. Kurt Whisler was 67th in 29:40.11 and Emerson Wright 78th in 30:06.82. Bowdoin was the men’s champion and the University of Southern Maine took second.
