The Presque Isle and Central Aroostook golf teams both placed seventh in the state in their respective classes, following the State Team Championships held Saturday at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro.
The Wildcats totaled 372 strokes to finish 53 behind victorious Falmouth. Houlton was second and York was third.
Evan Waddell, a freshman, carded PI’s low round of the day with an 89. Jordan Hallett came in with a 90 and Travis Dyer shot a 92. John Humphrey (101) and Keenan Eaton (113) also competed for the Wildcats.
“Even though we certainly did not finish the way we would have wanted to, my younger players got a valuable learning experience and we were very happy to get the opportunity to play on a challenging, yet very beautiful course,” said Presque Isle coach Jim York.
“We came a long way with a very young team.”
Presque Isle will return four of its top five golfers next year. “They have now gained an insight into what it takes to compete at such a level, and I hope they will use it as motivation for next season,” York added.
Central Aroostook had a score of 391 in the Class C meet. St. Dominic’s won the state title with a 327.
Sean McIntyre shot an 89 and Kaine Kingsbury a 94 as the Panthers’ top performers in the tourney. Will DeLong came in with a 101, while T. J. Turley shot a 107 and Abe Brewer a 114.
The state individual tournament will be held this Saturday, also at Natanis.
Hallett, Humphrey and Dyer will be Presque Isle’s representatives, while Kingsbury will compete for Central Aroostook.
All four student-athletes made the field by virtue of their results at qualifying events which were held recently.
