ASHLAND – The reported theft of money being collected for a local boy may just be nothing more than a rumor, according to police.     To help raise funds for Devin Whitmore, a 2-year-old struck by a vehicle nearly a month ago, canisters had been placed around the community to collect money for the family. Recently a story began to circulate that someone claiming to be a family member had gone around picking up the money. People began spreading the story person-to-person and even by e-mail.
“We received a report that money being collected for the Whitmore child had been taken. But upon investigating the claim, no proof was found to prove a theft occurred,” said Chief Cyr Martin, of the Ashland Police Department.
Cyr indicated it could have been a case where someone had a large bill, wanted to make a donation but didn’t want to put the whole amount in and subsequently made change.
“At this time, we don’t have any proof a crime occurred,” said Cyr. “It appears to be just a rumor at this point.”
