Island Falls Notes

On Sept. 19 volunteers at the Upper Room in Sherman were John and Shelly Stevens, Riva, Marion Hoar and Barbara Pelletier, all from Island Falls.

It was a lovely, but windy, late summer day and business was quite brisk all day. Many ladies were there to outfit their children for the coming winter months and one family came in with their children and they had a great time selecting what they wanted, plus picking out a toy for them to take home. A few men also arrived and did very well in finding just what they needed, and all went back home happily with their choices.

Ed Wood has returned to his home in Wilton, N.H., after spending several days at the family camp on Upper Mattawamkeag Lake and getting it ready for the winter months.

Mr. and Mrs Dean Fitzgerald have closed their summer cottage at Pleasant Pond and have returned to their home in Millinocket.

I was in Patten a few days ago and while there I paid a visit to friends, Gertrude Webb and Margaret Duffy, at Mountain Heights. They are roommates and are always happy to see me, and I chat with them both, and they like to hear about the wildlife that occasionally arrives in my backyard.

Recently, on my back lawn I have seen several big black crows and they all seem to like my birch tree and have a special branch they light upon while looking for something to eat. The branch appears to be dead and it could break off, I think, if three or four of them sat on it. So far, that hasn’t happened.

I did have the good luck to have four deer down back around dusk one evening about four days ago. First a young one appeared, then another and then two adults. The little ones cavorted around a bit, ignored by the grown-ups, then quick as a flash they were off into the woods as it was getting dark.
