The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s and women’s soccer teams hosted a pair of New York-based schools over the weekend, and both Owl squads managed a win and a tie.

The UMPI women received a pair of goals from Jessica Kinney and one each from Erin Pelletier and Chelsea Boudreau in a 4-0 victory over Paul Smith College Saturday. Olivia Jameson, Desiree Smith and Carolynn Tuck picked up assists for the Owl women, who outshot their opponents, 34-0.
On Sunday, UMPI tied SUNY-Canton, 3-3. Jameson opened the scoring with a goal off a Tuck assist six minutes into the match, but SUNY-Canton tallied twice before UMPI’s Carmen Allen booted in a penalty kick just before intermission.
Smith gave the Lady Owls the lead with an unassisted goal with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation before the visitors tied it on Niki Perkins’ second goal of the game four minutes later.
UMPI, now 3-1-1, welcomed back starting goalie Billie Martin, who had missed the first several games with an injury but returned for both over the weekend.
Coach Alan Gordon’s Owl men scored in each half of a 2-0 win over Paul Smith College Saturday. Devon Peaslee scored the first-half goal and assisted on Corey Fournier’s second-half tally, while Richard Felbaum saved both shots he faced to earn the shutout.
Felbaum also held the opponents scoreless Sunday, but UMPI was also unable to find the back of the net as its match with SUNY-Canton ended in a scoreless tie. Felbaum saved 11 of 21 shot attempts in the match, while Eamon Case of SUNY-Canton turned away four of 15 attempts.
The Owl men also stand at 3-1-1 following the weekend contests.
In cross country, UMPI’s Kurt Whisler’s 20th-place performance led his team at the University of New Brunswick Invitational Meet Friday in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The Owl men placed third in the team results behind St. Francis Xavier University of Nova Scotia and host UNB.
Hannah Smith and Shelley Hanson were the Lady Owls’ top finishers in the women’s meet, which saw St. Francis Xavier dominate to win the title. Smith was 30th overall at 24:12, while Hanson was one place behind at 24:29.
In a dual meet against Unity College held on Sept. 13 during Homecoming Weekend at UMPI, the Owls were able to easily claim a pair of titles.
The Owl women won their meet by scoring 20 points, compared to 38 by the visitors. Chandra Wisneski scored a 27-second victory over Unity’s Stacy Morrison for the individual championship. Wisneski had a time of 24:09, with Morrison next in 24:36.
UMPI athletes Smith, Hannah Shepard and Hanson rounded out the overall top-five. Smith came in at 24:54, Shepard at 25:47 and Hanson at 25:48.
The UMPI men featured the overall winner in Justin Fereshetian, who came in at 29 minutes and 39 seconds, but also demonstrated their depth by taking the next four positions as well. Whisler was next in 30:13, Presque Isle native Emerson Wright third in 32:26 and Brad Burlock and Chris Rines, both of Caribou, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Burlock’s time was 34:31 and Rines crossed the line in 35:13.
Josh Miller of Unity College was his team’s fastest runner on the day as he finished in 35:29.
Unity had just four runners competing, therefore did not figure in the team results.
At Natanis Golf Club Sunday, UMPI participated in the Colby College Classic Golf Tournament. The event had a unique format, with two-person teams competing in best-ball for the first six holes, a scramble for holes 7 through 12 and alternate shot for the final six holes.
The Owl duo of Brett Hooper and Matt Dubay had a great day on the course, carding a score of 74 to take fourth place overall.
The Husson College twosome of Chris Coffin, a sophomore from Presque Isle, and Chris Hamel was the winner with a 68.
UMPI’s Paul Rucci and Chad Phillips had a total of 84 for the day.
The Owls placed fifth in the six-team event with a  248, with Husson posting the winning score with a 217 and Bowdoin 10 strokes back. Bates College, Maine Maritime Academy and host Colby were the other competing teams.
