Ark Animal Sanctuary

Recently The Ark took in two senior Chihuahuas as an owner surrender. Both were approximately 11 years old and weighed no more than 5 pounds apiece. The male was named Coco and the female was Punkin. They were two very sweet dogs and you could tell that they had been loved very much. Due to health issues, the owners could no longer care for them.

Coco and Punkin were placed in a foster home and were treated like members of the family.
Punkin and Coco’s first stop was the vet for a thorough health exam, where it was determined that they both needed some serious dental work. Coco needed to be neutered and we discovered that Punkin had a heart murmur. The surgeries were scheduled and the two breezed through it with flying colors. Needless to say, we acquired quite a large vet bill to get the two of them healthy enough for adoption.
Now that they were ready for adoption, we knew that finding a home for two senior dogs with no teeth and one having a heart murmur was not going to be an easy task. Most people want puppies or dogs that have no special needs. Coco and Punkin are two of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. Having no teeth has not slowed them down and neither has Punkin’s heart murmur.
The day I was getting ready to post their pictures for adoption, I received an e mail from their foster mom wanting to know if she could adopt them both. She was willing to do whatever it took. This didn’t really surprise me as she has opened her heart and taken in senior dogs before.
These days, Coco and Punkin are living the good life. They have nothing but the best and they couldn’t be loved more. They get to stay together and will never want for anything.
Even though their foster mom has flunked fostering 101, the smile on her face when she talks about these two is priceless. Thank you for opening your heart and your home to two special-needs dogs. There is a special place in heaven for you.
Please join us for a bake sale outside Hollywood Pet Salon on May 30 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
We are also in need of some items for the new sanctuary. We need a washer and dryer, a stove, refrigerator and microwave, if anyone has any of these items that they would like to donate.
Thank you for your continued support and, as always, thank you for reading our column.
