Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
Over a 10-year span Dr. Terrence Holt wrote nine stories from his experiences as an intern and doctor. “Internal Medicine – A Doctor’s Stories” is an eye-opener to the mysteries of the human body and spirit.
Whatever your inclination towards medical personnel, these short stories – nine of them – are touching, very personal in detail, and left this reader with much to consider about patients in crisis, hospitals as entities and doctors as humans with compassion and frailties.

Titled “The Surgical Mask,” one part of this book portrays doctors making house calls (unheard of today!) detailing disturbing feelings of futility, intense compassion, and emotional struggles which are experienced by the patient, doctor, caregiver and the intense joy the patient exhibited in her art.
This book is a comment on life, medical dilemmas, hope, and real people experiencing authentic journeys through the eyes of a wonderfully talented author. It is a thoughtful and valuable addition to Cary Library’s shelves… enjoy.
