Potato shippers’ alert — From one-half to two-thirds of the cars now leaving Maine are often infected with powdery scab to an extent easily discoverable on inspection. An effort has been made to place in the hands of all shippers from Maine’s quarantined districts, new rules and regulations governing the inspection, certification and shipment of potatoes.
Cole recounts Civil War experiences — A very pretty reception was given Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Cole by their friends at their home in New Limerick, the event being Mr. Cole’s 88th birthday. Mr. Cole very entertainingly told of life in Aroostook 70 years ago, the lumberwoods, which at that time was the principal industry and of his experiences and injury received in the Civil War.

Special showing — Announcing, “Gone with the Wind,” in a special four-day showing at the Temple Theatre; reserved seats 75 cents, matinee and $1.10 evening showings.
Parking notice — No person shall use any part of Market Square so called, in said Houlton, for a standing or parking place for public truck teams or motor vehicles used for trucking purposes. Any person who shall be guilty of a violation shall forfeit and pay a sum of not less than five dollars nor more than thirty.

At the movies — Playing this week at the Temple Theatre: “Goodbye Charlie” starring Tony Curtis, Debbie Reynolds and Pat Boone; “Strange Bedfellows” featuring Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida, Gig Young; and a limited showing of “The Mummy.”

Building boom — This past year was the biggest building year in some time for Houlton. From all indications, 1965 will be another banner year. Construction is taking all forms: work on Interstate 95, building of private homes, the new junior high school, border patrol headquarters, and Sampson’s supermarket which opened for business yesterday.

Houlton Lions induct first women — On March 6, Bonnie Kitchen and Sheila Vicini became the first two women inducted into the Lions in Houlton. The new members were sponsored into the club by their husbands, King Lion Michael Kitchen and Lion William Vicini.
New troopers join F Troop — Ranks of the Maine State Police have been increased by the addition of 33 troopers. To Troop F Houlton are assigned: John-Paul E. Cote, Tammy J. Doyle, William E. Googins, John F. O’Hara, Timmy J. Saucier and Shawn E. Whalen.
