VaJoWa Country Club in Island Falls was the site of this year’s Aroostook League Golf Championship and Regional Qualifier.
The Katahdin Cougars prevailed in the 72-hole event with a score of 339, 37 strokes lower than runner-up Central Aroostook. Both the Cougars and the Panthers used their 1-2 finish to qualify for the Class C State Team Championships, to be held at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro Oct. 11.
Evan McCarthy of Katahdin was the medalist of the tourney, firing a six-over-par 78. His teammates, Josh Guiggey and Andrew Hawkins, were two of only four others in the field to break 90. Guiggey shot an 84 and Hawkins an 87.
Leading Central Aroostook and earning a berth in the Class C State Individual Championships at Natanis on Oct. 18 was Kaine Kingsbury, who shot an 88.
David Dubois of Southern Aroostook was the other top golfer on the day. He was runner-up to McCarthy with an 81.
After Katahdin and CA, Fort Fairfield was third with a 415, followed by Hodgdon (439) and Limestone/MSSM (499).
Also for CA, Sean McIntyre carded a 90 and Will Delong a 92 in the tournament.
Landon Towle was the top golfer for the Tigers with a score of 102.
In regular season action, the Presque Isle Wildcats were beaten twice last week.
Stearns topped the Wildcats by a single stroke at Hillcrest Golf Club in Millinocket last Wednesday, 171-172.
Travis Dyer shot a 40 and Jason Martin a 42 to pace Presque Isle.
On Friday, the ‘Cats lost another road match, this time at Houlton.
The Shires carded an impressive 153 on their home course to win by 21 strokes.
Martin led PI with a 41, while Evan Waddell came in at 43.
