Playing four games in just seven days, the Presque Isle JV girls soccer team might be a bit battered, but is still sporting a 4-1-1 record to start their young season. The Lady Wildcats posted two early-season wins at Madawaska (4-1) and Fort Kent (2-0) before facing a tough Caribou side. The Presque Isle-Caribou showdown took place last Tuesday in Presque Isle. The match was evenly contested, with both teams creating chances in the first half. The Lady Vikings scored with just over 15 minutes to go in the half to take the lead. The Lady Wildcats pressed for an equalizer in the second half, but were unable to find the net.
Without even a day’s rest, the Lady Wildcats hosted the Houlton Lady Shiretowners. With two first-half goals from Haley Johnston and Chelsey Carroll, the Wildcats pulled out to an early lead and never looked back. Kate Campbell and Lindsay Michaud netted second-half goals to give the Wildcats a 4-0 victory, while goalkeeper Rilee Currie stopped all three shots she faced in the win.
Just a few days later, the Wildcats traveled to Ellsworth to face the Eagles. Missing a few players due to injuries and other commitments, many players saw action in different positions.
“The girls really stepped it up in this game,” said second-year coach Todd Player. “We faced a tough Ellsworth team, created a lot of chances to score, and defended well.” Neither team was able to find the net, though, and the contest ended in a scoreless draw. Goalies Rilee Currie and Dani Wooland turned away four shots from Ellsworth in the game.
On Monday, the Wildcats hosted Madawaska and posted a 3-0 victory. Two goals by Kate Campbell and one from Shae Adler were enough to seal the win for Presque Isle. Both Presque Isle netminders, Currie and Wooland made key saves.
