PRESQUE ISLE – Maine Public Service Company will provide four energy-saving workshops, at no cost, in Aroostook County to help citizens find ways to reduce soaring energy costs. Three workshops will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., Sept. 19, in Island Falls at the Community Center; Sept. 26 at Nadeau Hall at the University of Fort Kent; and Oct. 3 at the Caribou High School cafeteria. Additionally, an Oct. 2,\ workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Edmonds Center at Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle.
“The workshops will inform homeowners and renters on ways to improve energy conservation and efficiency practices in order to be prepared for the winter season,” said Nancy Chandler, MPS workshop organizer.
Chandler encourages everyone to attend one of the energy workshops to learn how to reduce home energy consumption and save money or their energy bills.
“We’re providing an opportunity for everyone to see there are steps they can take to reduce their energy costs. Many times, these can be simple, inexpensive measures,” she said.
Workshops will focus on simple ways citizens can conserve energy such as: turning off the lights in vacant rooms, unplugging unused appliances, weatherizing windows and using energy-efficient light bulbs. The workshop is broken down in four breakout sessions: Session One provides information on energy audits presented by professional energy auditors, who will demonstrate how home energy improvements can reduce energy bills; Session Two introduces alternative energy, such as solar, wind, geothermal, heat pumps, etc. The session also provides information for utilizing renewable energy sources in a typical home and the cost effectiveness of each option. Session Three describes the process needed for customers investing in renewable resources and portable generators. Net metering and space heater safety will also be discussed. Session Four addresses energy conservation, low-costs/no-cost options for home owners, how to read the electric meter, cost of operating appliances, etc.
Attendees will have the opportunity to attend two breakout sessions. Each session lasts a half hour. After each session, all participants will convene to attend a PowerPoint presentation on energy saving measures.
The workshops feature a blend of keynote speakers, breakout sessions and panel discussions. Participants will receive an assortment of energy-saving items. Registration for the workshops is free, and all sessions are open to the public. For more information, contact Chandler at 760-2556.
