Special to the Star-Herald
There is a new way to help the Central Aroostook Humane Society earn money. If you log on to www.searchandgive.com, each search you do will earn the humane society one cent. Yes, a penny, but just think about how many searches you do at one sitting.
As we see it, every bit helps, so when you search, please log on to searchandgive and earn money to help the animals.
We are all worried about heating oil prices this winter; the shelter is no different. If you have any money to give, we would greatly appreciate it. You can donate money for our fuel by sending it directly to Daigle Oil Company; be sure to specify that it is for the Central Aroostook Humane Society.
Does it seem like we are “scampering”? Well we are full to the brim with wonderful cats and dogs; we are almost in a panic. It costs us a lot of money to care for the animals we house. One of our biggest expenses is cat litter. We go through a lot of it. Litter must be changed daily; that is over 60 litter boxes! We can also use paper towels and cleaning supplies, bleach and laundry detergent. Our staff has been working hard to make what we have last as long as possible and cut costs where we can without the animals suffering. It has been hard, but they are so awesome and creative!
Speaking of awesome, I have to say out loud, “OUR STAFF IS THE BEST.” If you have ever met any of them, you know what I mean. Their first priority is for the care of the animals, before and after adoption. They want the animals to be healthy before adoption and happy after. It takes a lot of work, especially with as many animals as we are housing, but honestly, they love what they do. Nobody expects to get rich working for a non-profit; we could never pay them what they are worth unfortunately, but if you ask them, they will tell you that their rewards come in finding awesome homes for the animals. If you haven’t said so, please thank them for what they do. Yes it is their job, but to be perfectly honest, they go that extra mile every day for the animals, above and beyond any job description. Their jobs are tough and emotionally driven, yet they are always pleasant and friendly. We are lucky to have each and every one of them.
I would like to welcome Kim Weeks to our staff. She has taken the part-time position of animal care technician. Kim brings to the shelter a love for animals and a commitment to their care. We are very happy to have her as a part of our staff.
If you are looking for a friend for life, please visit the Central Aroostook Humane Society or give us a call at 764-3441. Please have your pets spayed or neutered!

MITTENS FINDS A HOME – Do you remember Mittens? She has been featured over and over as Pet of the Week. Mittens came to the Central Aroostook Humane Society on Sept. 14, 2007. We have had her spayed and shots updated. She has waited and waited in her little hammock for just the right person; well the GREAT news is they showed up. Mittens has a wonderful new home! All of us at the Central Aroostook Humane Society are so very happy for Mittens, she deserves the best!
