Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
Two wonderful children’s books are the focus this week: “Emily’s Blue Period” by Cathleen Daly with illustrations by Lisa Brown. A “chapter book” for progressing readers, it features Emily, whose family is apart and so many changes have developed. She is sad (the BLUE part) and can’t do her school art project requiring black charcoal — did you know Picasso had a “Blue” period, too? Chapter 5 and collage do somewhat help Emily’s mood improve, when her little brother scribbles a heart on the project.
This book touches on the delicate feelings of children when divorce happens and two homes must be set up. Pictures have a spare appearance yet dictate the emotions very well.
Our second book, “Loon Baby” by MollyBeth Griffin is the classic theme of a lost youngster, the panic created, and the joyous return to Mother. Anne Hunter illustrates with full pages in dreamy colors and large type print.
During the story Baby Loon learns to dive, sees creatures under the water surface and becomes royally lost. As you can predict, Baby Loon gives a frantic wailing cry which has his Mom there in a jiffy.
These and many other new books have been placed in the children’s section of Cary Library supported by individual donations and organizations. Take a look!
