100 Years Ago-Nov. 4, 1914

A party of hunters — A party composed of Newbert Rhoda, Flora Hunter and Allie Hunter of Hodgdon; Marjorie Pollard of Masardis and Harold Logie, I. G. Stewart, Helen Bliss and Winnie Logie of this town (Linneus), chaperoned by Mrs. E. S. Bliss, spent several days the past week on a hunting trip to Stewart’s camp.

A much-needed rest — Mrs. Frank H. Anderson closed her dressmaking rooms the first of November and they will remain closed until the first of March. Mrs. Anderson has been in business for the past twenty years and she is to take a much-needed rest.

Red Cross seeks war needs support — Faced with a growing demand for Red Cross assistance to the stricken populations of Europe’s warring nations, and a need for strengthening domestic operations, the American Red Cross will embark November 11 on the greatest membership campaign since the World War, Rev. A. G. Christopher, chairman of Southern Aroostook Red Cross Chapter declared today.
Potato auto plates — The Aroostook Development Association is soliciting every automobile owner and asking his cooperation through the purchase of membership certificate and an Aroostook Potato Auto Plate for his car.

Ricker Tavern Boys to sing on TV — The Tavern Boys of Ricker College will be on a statewide telecast Monday evening for the Maine Republican organization. The group includes Bob Little of Houlton.

In the military — Airman Paul D. Palmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul D. Palmer of Monticello, has completed Air Force basic military training at Lackland, AFB, Texas. Airman Thomas M. Carleton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Travers B. Carleton of Houlton has also completed basic training at Lackland AFB.

Seven local runners head to NYC — Seven local runners have been training hard for the Nov. 5, New York City Marathon. Area men competing as part of the Musterds, a County running team are: Doug Swallow, Joe Dahn, John Donato, Steve McDonald, Rusty Taylor, Fred Putnam and Ervin MacDonald.
Aroostook population figures — An estimated 10,144 people moved out of Aroostook County from April of 1980 through July of 1988, a decrease of 5.9 percent, according to recently released U.S. Bureau of Census figures. Limestone, including Loring Air Force Base, recorded a population increase of 1,831 through the eight-year period, up to 10,550 from 8,719. Minor increases were also noted in Sherman, up 29 people to 1,050; and Hodgdon, up 16 residents to 1,100.
