Civil war widow Mary (Monteith) Benson — Mrs. Mary Jane Benson, 88, died Saturday at her home on the Ludlow road. Mrs. Benson was born in North Providence, Ireland, May 18, 1826, and moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Monteith, to Fredericton, N. B. before later moving to Bridgewater, Me. She married her first husband,
Frank Taggett, 67 years ago. He was killed in the battle of Winchester (Virginia, 1863), leaving his widow with the care of nine children. In 1869 she married Thos. Benson who died in 1896.
Lumbermen waiting for rain — Dewey Hersey (Littleton) who has been at work at the Milliken Lumber Co., is at home waiting for rain, the water being so low that lumber cannot be floated to the mill.

Houlton’s first Air Show a success — A large crowd estimated at between 4,000 and 5,000 people gathered at the Houlton airport Sunday afternoon to witness the first air show to be held here for many years. The two most sensational features of the day were the stunt flying exhibition and the parachute jump. Only four planes participated due to unfavorable conditions and 217 passengers enjoyed flights over Houlton.
File photo 1939IN CHARGE — Harvard Cumming, son of Mrs. Phyllis Cumming of Houlton, has been promoted to manager of the First National Store on Main Street. He graduated from Houlton High School in 1937 and has been a part-time employee previous to his graduation. In the fall of 1937, he went to California where he found employment in a chain grocery store for several months. He spent the last year as assistant manager at the Houlton store.
Spencer Tracy film at Temple — A great actor in a great picture is the treat in store when Darryl F. Zanuck’s production “Stanley and Livingstone” plays at the Temple Theatre. It’s another masterful performance by Spencer Tracy, twice winner of the Academy Award, as Stanley. Also starring are Nancy Kelly, Richard Greene, Walter Brennan, Charles Coburn, and Sir Cedric Hardwicke as Livingstone.

Bids on Monticello school — School Administrative District 29 has advertised for bids on the construction of an all-purpose building for Monticello. Bids will be accepted until Oct. 20 for the addition to the Wellington School. The district is also constructing an addition to the high school at Houlton to have a combined Junior-Senior high. The cost for the Monticello building, including full equipment, is expected to be around $80,000.

Walking for health in Houlton — During September, more than 115 Houlton residents took part in “30 Miles in 30 Days,” a program sponsored by Houlton Regional Hospital, Houlton Parks and Recreation and WHOU radio to provide an incentive for individuals to improve their well-being. The individual totaling the most miles was Bernice Graham who walked 218 miles during September.
Arthur Howell visits school — Wildlife rehabilitator Arthur Howell made three presentations to students at Southern Aroostook Community School in Island Falls to discuss the habitat of Maine wildlife. He made a hit with the students with the assistance of his live skunk, T. S. Snookens, also Woody the raccoon and McCoot the owl.
