The Houlton High School golf team’s perfect season was marred on Friday at Hidden Meadows Country Club in a match against Old Town (12-1), Mattanawcook Academy (11-4) and Orono.
Houlton is 10-1 after their loss to Old Town, 172-173, but a win over Mattanawcook Academy which scored a 187. Orono had no team score.
“Both Old Town and Mattanawcook Academy are very good teams,” said Houlton coach Dave Grant. “We have played Mattanawcook Academy twice so far and won the first match by three stokes at Jato, and the second match by six strokes at home. Old Town is a Class B team and has come along way these last two years.”
The low medalist last Friday at Hidden Meadows was Old Town’s Chris Kauppila, who fired a 40.
Houlton’s Ryan Dee was a stroke behind Kauppila with a 41, followed by Drew Marino with a 42; Cameron Clark, 44; and Billy Phillips with a 46.
Other Houlton scores were: Parker Brewer, 48; Kyle Bouchard, 49; Aaron Sewell, 50; Duncan Bradshaw, 61; and Devin Ivey, 67.
Old Town scores included: Kauppila, 40; Devan Morin, 43; Alex Blackie, 44; Cole Daniel and Andrew Moreira, both 45s; Lucas Shorette, 47; Darin Gardner, 49; and Wes Kauppila, 64.
Mattanawcook Academy scores were: Logan Thompson 43; Jeff Garfield, 45; Connor McLaughlin, 49; Elliott Sibley, 50; Andrew Johnson and Joe Santore, both 57s; and Tori Jordan, 58.
Sam Holt carded a 43, while Ryan Wells tallied a 47 and Garry Morneault, a 56 for Orono.
“We are a veteran team,” Grant said. “The juniors and seniors have won the PVC and Regional tournament the last two years and finished second in the state tournament in 2012 and third in 2013.”
Seniors playing for Houlton are Clark and Bouchard, along with juniors, Dee, Brewer, Sewell and Phillips and freshmen Marino, Bradshaw and Ivey.
“It has been a pleasure coaching/teaching these young men for the past three years,” Grant said. “They love the game of golf and work hard to improve their skills. They are definitely gentlemen on and off the course and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
On Tuesday, Sept. 23, the Shire golfers were in Presque Isle and then finish their regular season on Monday, Sept. 29 at Jato in Lincoln with Mattanawcook Academy and Searsport. On Oct. 2, the Houlton golfers will play their Penobscot Valley Conference and regional title match at Jato.
