ISLAND FALLS, Maine — Officials with Emera Maine were still unsure Monday morning what caused a power outage that left 2,753 customers without electricty in the Island Falls area Friday afternoon.
Customers in Crystal, Dyer Brook, Oakfield, Patten, Sherman and Stacyville were also affected by the outage, according to information released Friday afternoon by Emera Maine spokesman Bob Potts.
“This was a complicated thing,” Potts said. “It took some time to trace where the issue was.”
Potts said crews were able to connect the problem to a small business, which caused the system to default. He declined to name the small business.
“When the problem happened with the customer’s service, it tripped back to the substation in Sherman,” he said. “They (crews) were able to get the substation restored, which returned power to all but about 700 customers Friday afternoon.”
Power was later restored to the remaining customers, with the exception of the small business that caused the original outage.
“The system worked exactly as it was supposed to by tripping at the substation,” he added. “We are working with the customer to rectify the problem.”
