The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will be accepting registrations for April vacation activities. To register, call 532-1310 by April 17.
Vacation Fun Program
Children in grades Pre-kindergarten through grade 6 are invited to spend three mornings at the Houlton Recreation Center on Tuesday-Thursday, April 22-24, from 9-11 a.m.
The daily schedule will include games, contests, crafts and snacks. Cost for this activity is $5 per child per day. Parents may sign their child up for one, two or all three mornings.
Sneakin’ In Science Program
The popular Sneakin’ In Science Program with instructor Sara McQuarrie will be held on Wednesday, April 23 from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Houlton Recreation Center. This program will explore all about Owls. Kids will dig through an Owl pellet to find out what an owl eats and they will identify the bones and maybe put the animal back together. Children will learn about the food chain and bring home all materials used in the program.
This program is for ages 7-12 and cost $12 per child. This has limited space of 15 youth.
The gym and game room will be open throughout the April break from 1-4 p.m. daily. The only closure will be on Sunday, April 20 due to Easter.
Couch to 5k Race
Ever thought about running a 5k (3.1 miles) race? Well here is an opportunity to train properly and participate in one.
The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department will be offering the “Couch to 5K” program with runner enthusiast Chris Rines.
The eight-week training will begin on Saturday, May 3 at 9 a.m. at the Gentle Memorial Building.
Each session will include a warm-up, a group run and a cool down. Participants will be given “homework” assignments for the week.
Rines has been running for nine years and has run every distance from 100-meter to full marathons. He ran for Caribou High School and the University of Maine Presque Isle.
He has a B. S. degree in athletic training from UMPI and currently works for County Physical Therapy.
Cost for the program is $20 per person and the department must have at least six individual registered for the program to be held.
