Full service deli and more

PRESQUE ISLE – Industrial Street One Stop is much more than a convenience store.
Beth Jennings, who co-owns the business with Michael Howlett, is right at home in the store’s deli.     “Our full service deli is available from open to close,” she said. “We make homemade bread sandwiches, including our popular new 1-Stop Italian. There’s also homemade pastries and sweets, and daily lunch specials. I don’t say that every Monday I’m having this, or Tuesday I’m making that. I try to mix it up. My customers will come in the morning to get their coffee and see what I’m having.
“If the lunch special is a sandwich I include chips and a can of soda,” said Jennings. “If it’s something hot, I include french fries. Every other Friday I try to do beans, potato salad, and hotdogs in a roll for one bulk price. I try to make it a special because I don’t want people to feel they can’t afford to come in for lunch.”
Other popular items include fish chowder, chicken stew, chop suey, lasagna, chicken cordon bleu sandwiches with fries, shepherd’s pie and chicken casserole.
“I sell a ton of roast beef sandwiches,” said Jennings. “When I make lasagna, I make it in two 9-by-13-inch pans and it goes fast. Those are some of the really popular dishes.”
Jennings said she is more than happy to take orders over the phone.
“I make everything fresh on the spot,” she said, “although I do have a cooler that I keep pre-made sandwiches in.”
Though Jennings is putting her focus on the deli, the business still operates as a convenience store.
“People still come in for beer, cigarettes, lottery tickets, candy bars and chips,” she said, “but I am now tremendously busy in the deli. I never dreamed things would go this well.”
Industrial Street One Stop also features a coffee bar.
Jennings said all her food is homemade.
“It’s not anything special, but people like homemade food rather than processed food,” said Jennings. “I’ve been told my portions are worth what I charge, too. I cook like I like to eat.”
Located at 11 Industrial St., the One Stop is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. The business is closed Sunday.
