History may have been made last week as both the Houlton and Hodgdon boys basketball squads scored more than 100 points on back-to-back nights. The Houlton boys continued their unbeaten ways and improved to 6-0 on the season. As of Monday morning, the Shires were the top seed in Eastern Class C, according to the Maine Principals Association Heal Points standings, with 14.6605 tournament index points. Calais (4-1) is the No. 2 team with 10.3395 points.
In Eastern Class D, Hodgdon (6-1, 9.5370 points) is second; Southern Aroostook (3-0, 3.9506) is tied for seventh with Fort Fairfield (3-2); Katahdin (4-2, 2.4383) is 11th; East Grand (0-4) and Greater Houlton Christian Academy (0-6) are tied for last in the 24-team region.
The following is a recap of boys basketball games played through Saturday, Dec. 28.
Hodgdon 104, GHCA 35 — At Hodgdon Saturday night, the Hawks scored early and often en-route to the lopsided victory. Hodgdon led 25-5, 63-18 and 96-25 at the quarter breaks.
Chris Hudson led the way with 40 points for the Hawks, while Deyrell Vargas chipped in 23; Tyler Sherman added 10; and Kevin McAfee had eight.
For the Hawks, Aaron Holmes had 14 points and Dana Brown chipped in 13.
Houlton 88, Madawaska 32 — At Madawaska Saturday afternoon, Kyle Bouchard paced the Shires with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Jake Condon added 19 points and 18 rebounds. Houlton led 25-8, 40-15 and 62-26 at the quarter breaks.
For the host Owls, Ian Lee had 16 points and Cedric Gendreau had 14.
Katahdin 60, East Grand 33 — At Danforth Saturday, Gavin Russell scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Cougars over East Grand. Russell also had 12 rebounds and six steals. Wyatt Morse chipped in 13 points and T.J. Young added 10.
The Cougars led 16-14, 24-22 and 44-27 at the quarter breaks.
For the Vikings, Ken Winiarski and Logan Crone both had nine points and Phil Farley added eight.
Houlton 108, Schenck 47 — At Houlton Friday evening, the Shires were firing on all cylinders as five players scored in double figures. Bouchard led the way with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Noah Holmes added 20 points off the bench, including four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Nick Guiod also had 20 points and five assists, while Condon added 12 points and Christian Crane had 11 points.
Houlton led 23-15, 47-18, and 80-29.
For Schenck, Justin Thompson tallied 17 points and Ryan Leavitt added eight.
Hodgdon 69, Limestone-MSSM 26 — At Hodgdon Dec. 23, Hudson dropped a game-high 25 points, including 13 in the first quarter, to lift the Hawks to victory. Vargas chipped in 11 points and Sherman added 10 for Hodgdon.
For the Eagles (0-5), Tristan Kirk had 11 points and Chris Bernier contributed eight.
Hodgdon led 21-4, 39-12 and 51-20 at the quarter breaks.
Easton 79, GHCA 22 — At the University of Maine-Presque Isle Dec. 26, the Bears (6-0) saw three players score double digits in the lop-sided victory. Hunter Turner led Easton with 20 points, while Drew Sotomeyer added 13 and Cody Halvorson had 10.
Brown paced the Eagles with 10 points.
Easton led 11-4, 36-7 and 59-15 at the quarter breaks.
