Elks Hoop Shoot moves to a new date

The date for the 42nd annual Elks Hoop Shoot competition has been changed. The event will now be held on Friday, Dec. 27 at Houlton High School, prior to the Houlton boys basketball game against Schenck. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m., with the competition following at 4 p.m.    “We are trying to promote the hoop shoot in a different way to improve the attendance,” said Marty Bouchard, one of the event organizers. “Children who come and shoot in the contest will be given a ticket to get into the varsity game for free that night.”
Contestants’ age groups will be determined by their age as of April 1, 2013. There are six age groups in the competition: boys age 8-9, girls age 8-9, boys age 10-11, girls age 10-11, boys age 12-13 and girls age 12-13.
The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals.
