Town races set as deadline comes to a close

HOULTON, Maine — The list of candidates looking to fill positions for the town is now finalized.
Seven candidates will be vying for two, three-year terms on the Houlton Town Council. Those seats are currently held by councilors John Fitzpatrick and John White Jr. Fitzpatrick is unable to run again due to term limits, which state a councilor may only serve two consecutive, three-year terms. In order to run again, an individual must take two full years off from serving on the council.

The candidates for town council include White, Priscilla Monroe, Mike Jenkins, Wade Hanson, Carl Lord Jr., Jerry Adams and Stan Ginnish.
Two candidates have returned nomination papers to have their names on the ballot for two, three-year terms on the RSU 29 school board. Fred Grant and Scott White currently hold those seats. Grant is seeking re-election, along with newcomer Jeremiah Crockett. White did not return his nomination papers.
Interest in serving on the town’s Board of Budget Review appears to be minimal as just one candidate — Phil Bernaiche — returned nomination papers. There are three, three-year seats and two, one-year positions available on that board.
Three individuals — Scott Austin, Albert Fitzpatrick and Micah Swallow — are candidates for seats on the Houlton Water Company board of trustees. There is one candidate — Leigh Cummings — for a seat on the Cary Library board of trustees.
