Nephew Ed Wood has arrived from his home in Wilton, N.H. to spend some time at the family cottage on upper Mattawamkeag Lake. He arrived the day the bad storm hit this area and this slowed down some of the work he wanted to do on the cottage. Good weather is expected soon, so he will get some of the job done before leaving for home.
Calvin Varney, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Varney, formerly of Island Falls, arrived Labor Day weekend to spend some time at the family cottage on Pleasant Pond to visit with brother, “Nicky” Varney and wife, Carol. While here, he checked out the Varney’s former home on David Street, which has been listed for sale.
I have had some interesting back yard visitors lately as last week. I watched a beautiful red fox lope from one side of my lawn to the other, once in awhile stopping to look around, scratch is ears then head in the direction of the woods. Must have taken him about 15 minutes before he disappeared into the woods. And, just the other evening, about dusk, I was checking the back yard for any activity when two stags appeared — first time in ages that I have seen a buck deer so close. One had quite a big rack and the other, smaller one, had a much smaller rack. I watched them for quite a long time as they were busy grazing and only went into the woods, as it was getting darker.
I still have a few chickadees and gold finch, but am not putting out too many sunflower seeds as yet. My garden full of zinnias was really soaked with all the rain lately and the storm the other day knocked down my glads. I had to pick three of them and hope the others withstand any more showers.
