Notice: The Washburn Recreation Department is featured on the top page for August in the Washburn Rotary calendar. The photos show eight action shots of the kids in the various summer programs and even a good photo of some of the senior citizens on one of their monthly field trips. Be sure and get your copy by contacting any Rotarian or phoning 455-8034, or White’s Service station has a few on hand.
On Wednesday, July 30, there will be basketball for grades K-2 from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 3-4 play from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 play from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There will be T-ball from 5 to 6:45 p.m.
On Thursday, July 31, there will be K-2 soccer from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., grades 3-4 play from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 go from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Also on Thursday, July 31, there will be arts and crafts for grades 5-8 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and grades K-4 goes from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The Minor League team plays at the elementary school field starting at 5:30 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 1, is a special day for the Rec Center. First of all, it is Marcie’s birthday!
Also on Friday, there will be an “End of Summer Barbecue” held at the elementary school from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This is for all who participated this summer in the various recreation programs. There will be lots to do, including some water related games. There will be hotdogs and burgers along with other snacks and drinks.
On Thursday, Aug. 7, there will be a County Fun Day at Birch Point in St. David. The van will be leaving the Rec Center at 8:15 a.m. and returning at 3:30 p.m., and the trip is limited to the first 13 who sign up. There will be kayaking or canoeing, swimming and other games. All will enjoy a hotdog roast for lunch, and those attending will need to bring bathing suits, towels and sunscreen.
A fun Outdoor Adventure Camp will be held the week of Sunday, July 27, through Friday, Aug. 1, and is open to ages 10 through 13. This is a day camp and goes from 1 to 4 p.m. at a cost of $45. The program is instructed by UMPI students and the assistant director of Gentile Hall. The participants will be doing team-building activities, canoeing, high and low ropes course, along with other adventure-related activities. Some of the events will be held on the UMPI campus, and transportation will be provided. This is limited to the first 10 students who sign up. The free summer breakfast and lunch program held at the elementary school will be through on Friday, Aug. 1. There was very good participation in the program this summer, and thanks go out to all who made the event successful.

Old flags needed
Washburn’s Dow Post 48 of the American Legion is planning a Flag Retirement ceremony to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19. At the town park on Main Street. The members of Boy Scout Troop 177, and some visiting Girl Scouts from Cadette Troop 016 in Caribou will be taking part, along with some help from the Washburn Fire Department.
Anyone having some flags that may be past due or nearing replacement is asked to donate them to the Legion for proper and honorable retirement. The names of Washburn’s deceased veterans will be listed during the ceremony, and more flags are needed. August Festival highlights
The dates for this annual event are Friday, Aug. 15, Saturday, Aug. 16 and Sunday, Aug. 17. Please note that there will be no Thursday events this year. Main Street will be closed Friday from 4:45 to 10:30 p.m. and all day Saturday; please use truck route (Canaan Avenue, Victoria Street and Hines Street’s Town Hill) for through traffic.
The theme this year is “Generations Past, Present and Future,” and the parade features Grand Marshal Herman Doody, and King and Queen Wendell and Joyce Doody. The annual WDHS Alumni Banquet will be on Friday, Aug. 15, at the high school with the social hour from 5 to 6 p.m. and supper to follow. Please bring a salad, casserole or dessert. The meal consisting of beans, rolls and coffee, including place settings, will be provided. Donations will be accepted and new officers will be elected. Festival music includes entertainment on Friday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., provided by the Aroostook County Bluegrass Band, featuring bluegrass and bluegrass gospel at the town park on Main Street from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. J.R. Mitchell will be providing musical entertainment and karaoke on the porch of the Town Office. The rain location will be the Washburn Fire Department bays, and any donation will be appreciated. The well-known McLaughlin Big Band will be performing in the town park from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, and Paul Clayton and Friends will be holding a country music jam from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Washburn Elementary School parking lot. The rain location will be at the high school and donations are appreciated. Starting at 6:30 p.m. and going to 8 p.m., a unique Family Video Dance will be held at Washburn District High School gymnasium. This is a special type of dance open to all ages from young to old. An admission fee will be charged, and the event is sponsored by the Class of 2009, with assistance from KC and Company, with proceeds going to the Class of 2009. Randy Michaud will be sharing his “Olde”-type country music talents at the elementary school parking lot, with the rain location at the fire department bays. ScapeGoat will be performing in the town park from 8 to 11 p.m. and the rain location is the Washburn High School gym. The annual gospel concert is being organized by Matt Palmer; for further information, messages can be left for him at the Town Office during regular business hours.
Starting at 8:30 p.m. on Friday night, there will be a showing of “Night at the Museum” for a Family Movie Night event. The movie will be shown on “the big screen” and can be viewed from the soccer field behind the museum barn. Refreshments will be available and this event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Washburn.
Saturday, Aug. 16, will begin with a super breakfast at the Washburn Trailrunners clubhouse from 6 to 9:30 a.m. The cost is a mere $6 and features a full plate of scrambled eggs, home fries, French toast, bacon or ham and coffee or juice.
An all-day event will be held at Story Park featuring a Medieval Troupe and will include various events throughout the day such as an archery exhibition and presenters in traditional costume.
The Arts and Crafts area will be located at Story Park on the corner of Main and Wilder streets, with setup beginning at 7 a.m., with the booths opening at 8 a.m. The rain location will be at the Washburn High School. For further information, contact Paul Carter at 455-4714.
There will be a children’s Bike Parade held on Main Street by the Town Office starting at 8:30 a.m. There will be first-, second- and third-place prizes awarded in age groups from 4-6, 7-9 and older. Immediately following the Bike Parade, there will be Baby Parade on Main Street at the same location for ages 0 – 3. Prizes awarded will be in the categories of Funniest, Most Decorative, Most Original, Smallest, Sportiest and Best Overall. For further information, contact Barbara Turner at 493-4405.
A fun Kid’s Carnival will be held at the school soccer field from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be a wresting demonstrations at the Katahdin Trust parking lot from 1 to 4 p.m.
Included in the many food booths, the Washburn Fire Department will be holding their famous Chicken Barbecue at the fire bay starting at 11:30 a.m. and going until food is gone! The Cost is $6 for adults and children under 12 eat for $3. The meal includes chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, chips, roll and a drink.
There will be a Baked Bean Supper at the Civic Center on Saturday, from 4:30 to 6:40 p.m., with meal provided by the Lidstone Memorial Methodist Church; and the Sunday brunch is once again sponsored by the Perham Ladies’ group. It will be held at the Civic Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults, children ages 5 to 12 $3 and those under 5 eat for free.
Events in the town park include a Living History Display on the front lawn of the museum starting at 8 a.m. and the Salmon Brook Historical Society Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Registration for those entering tractors in the Antique Tractor Pull will be held at McCrum’s Plant on the Parsons Road starting at 8 a.m. and tractors must be pre-registered by noon. There may even be a ladies’ and youth class if time permits. The Tractor Pulls will be held at McCrum’s Plant on the Parsons Road starting at 1 p.m. Tractors must be pre-registered by noon. A Horseshoe Tournament will be held at 2 p.m. at the Thomas Brewer Park with registration beginning at 1 p.m. for this double-elimination event. The cost is $5 per person, with the prize being half of total entry fees collected, and the event is sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 177.
The Washburn Rotary will hold their second annual Rubber Ducky 50/50 Derby at 4 p.m. with the launch point being at the Mill Pond foot bridges. There will be duck pre-sales at the Washburn Town Office and during the festival at the Rotary booth in the park; 170 little yellow duckies will be sold at a cost of $5 each, with the proceeds to benefit the Mill Pond Project.
There will be ATV Pull registration starting at 11 a.m. rain or shine at a cost of $10 per class. The pulls start at noon at the ATV clubhouse on Gould Street behind the Washburn Food Mart. Admission is free and cash awards will be given.
The fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. on the hill behind the high school. The rain date will be Sunday, Aug. 17, same time, same place.
Tri-Community notes
The Perham Town Office will be closed from Thursday, July 24 through Monday, Aug. 4.
Please note that as of July, Washburn’s newsletter the “Scoop” will be published only four times a year rather than monthly.This is part of the conscious effort the town is looking into to cut costs for the community. The next issue is due to be published in October.
Please note the deadline for those wishing to enroll in Washburn’s Tax Club is set for Friday, Aug. 15. Forms and information are available at the Washburn Town Office during regular business hours, or by phoning 455-8485.
New summer hours for the Town Office are as follows: Monday through Thursday, the office will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the lunch hour remaining from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and closing at noon on Fridays. These hours will remain in effect through Aug. 31.
The next meeting of the Washburn Town Council will be held at the Civic Center on Monday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m. All interested residents are welcome to attend.
Volunteers are needed for several August Festival events. Those who have received their donor letters are asked to send in their donations as soon as possible.
TOPS will be meeting each Monday at the Washburn Trailrunners clubhouse, starting with weigh-in at 4:15 p.m. and the meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. For further information, contact Birdena Cochran at 455-8353.
There are tickets for the Salmon Brook Historical Society’s quilt raffle available at the Katahdin bank where the quilt is on display. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 for the quilt made and donated by Jill Fox.
There will be monthly seminars held at the Knot II Bragg Farm on the New Dunn Town Road in Wade. Classes start at 10 a.m. run for about four hours for a small fee. The next class will be about simple country remedies and is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 8.
