Devastating storm sweeps Patten — The towns of Patten and Crystal were the center of a wind and hail storm last Tuesday which caused such destruction of crops and property it may well be termed a disaster. What had been green potato fields were broken masses of broken tops and huge barns had been moved several feet off their foundations. Hailstones, larger than residents had ever seen, were piled up to depths of two and three feet in some places. Gov. Lewis O. Barrows promised citizens some means would be found to open schools on schedule despite the absolute cessation of tax income due to the devastation of crops by the storm.
