Under an overcast sky, the annual Northern Maine Soap Box Derby was run on Derby Hill in Community Park on Saturday.
This year’s double-elimination race featured around 40 drivers.
Leif Dahlk of Monticello was crowned the Stock Division champion, while Chris Bruen claimed the Super Stock title.
Dahlk raced Cole Winslow for the championship, while Bruen was up against former champion Olivia White. The two winners will now advance to the All-American Soap Box Derby Race in Akron, Ohio at the end of July.
The top eight finishers in the Stock Division who were: Dahlk, who took home $350; Winslow, $150; Yvonne Henderson, $75; Mallory Bruen, $50; Holden Stoutamyer, Levi Brown, Anna Hogan and Caden Foster, all $25.
The top eight drivers in the Super Stock Division were: C. Bruen, $350; White, $150; Rachel Graves, $75; Jessica Dickison, $50; Jillian Haggerty, Jennah Rand, Adam Casillas and Emily Shaw, all $25.
Special Award winners were: Wayne Miller Sportsmanship Award, Colton Folsom; Alicia Dudzinski Spirit Memorial Award to Emily Shaw, who drove the Houlton Southside Gifted and Talented derby car sponsored by Biomass.
Committee Award winners in memory of Chris Hiscoe and Aimee Fitzpatrick were Caleb Thompson and M. Bruen.
The award for Best Decorated Stock Car was won by Stoutamyer, with the super stock best decorated car going to Casillas.
The VIP stock and super stock winners were Jayden Swimm, who drove Wellington School’s derby car sponsored by Dalton’s Junk Yard and Shaw, who drove Houlton Southside School’s car. Each driver received $25 in memory of long-time derby supporter Bill Weber, who passed away in July 2011.
