Paul Dudley, of Easton, will join thousands of individuals from Maine, other parts of the U.S. and even parts of Europe to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg and its role in the Civil War. Nearly 20,000 re-enactors are expected to take part in the week-long slate of festivities, including re-enacting the famous battle on farmland near the rural Pennsylvanian site.
The commemorative ceremony, “Gettysburg: A New Birth of Freedom,” will take place on Sunday, June 30, with a number of activities planned to mark the occasion. From July 1-4 the National Park Service Ranger Programs will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettsyburg. For more information, visit www.nps.gov.
Dudley, a former teacher, has devoted a great deal of time over the years to teaching the public about the Civil War, through re-enactment events. He and other like-minded folk from The County will be traveling to Pennsylvania to be part of this historic occasion.
“Civil War re-enactors from Aroostook County will be going to the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg. We’ll be taking part in school of the soldier at the end of this month and encourage public participation,” said Dudley. “We expect 15,000 to 20,000 to take part in festivities, which will be held just outside Gettysburg.”
The “school” will feature such things as practicing musketry.
“That will take place at Cary Plantation (here in Aroostook) and anyone who’d like to participate can contact me for more information by calling 488-6841 or e-mailing redfox10@roadrunner.com,” he said.
