Houlton Community Arts Center Council elected new leadership during its annual meeting in May. Kevin Mania stepped into the position of president of the council, allowing Torrey Sylvester to take his past role as chair of fundraising committee.
David McGillicuddy accepted the vice president position and Julie Delano accepted the role of treasurer. Barbara Brown was not present but remains secretary at this time.
“I’m looking forward to having more performances come to our Community Arts Center and working towards moving forward with our plans,” Mania said of his new role. “I am happy to be a part of this organization and proud to be working on this great project that will bring needed attention and business to our community.”
The Houlton Community Arts Center Council hosted a series of comedy events from January through June this year. They expect to open the doors for community entertainment again beginning in September.
“We don’t have air conditioning in the auditorium and, as attendees to our recent show with comedian Bob Marley witnessed, it can get pretty warm in there when the room is full,” explains Kristen Wells, Managing Director of Houlton Community Arts Center. “We have a short ‘wish list’ that will help make the auditorium more fully functional year-round. While we put together entertainment for the fall and next year, we’ll be fundraising for air conditioning, an installed screen and projector and proper signage.”
Continuing plans to build an addition onto Houlton High School remains the top priority of the Houlton Community Arts Center Council. With crowded student rehearsal space and lack of storage, the auditorium stage is often filled with overflow that limits availability of the auditorium for students, the community or rental events.
Plans for the addition began simultaneously with the renovation of the auditorium space and the council intends to proceed with these plans when the funding is available and community is ready to help.
