Dow earns award

    Retired Colonel Malcolm T. Dow of Hollis, formerly of Houlton, has been named “Legendary Trooper” the highest honor for a state police retiree. Dow served 23 years in the state police and retired in 1999.

FS-Mac Dow-dcx-pt-24    He now serves as security director for Irving Oil, splitting his time between Portsmouth, N.H. and Saint John, New Brunswick. Dow joined the state police in 1976 and served in Aroostook County for the next 17 years rising in rank to lieutenant as the commanding officer for Troop F in Houlton, where he also lived for a number of years.
    He was named Trooper of the Year in 1980. In 1993 Dow was promoted to Deputy Chief by Col. Alfred Skolfield and later succeeded him in the top job. Dow served as chief for two years and also served as acting Commissioner of Public Safety for much of that time. Dow and his wife Susan have two grown children and four grandchildren.
    Dow was formally presented with his honor on June 11 at the annual State Police Awards ceremony, which took place at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro.
