Thursday evening, Maine State Police troopers responded to seven different automobile accidents involving deer or moose in the roadway.
“The state police would like to remind motorists that moose and deer are very active right now, especially at night and commonly cross roadways as they travel,” said Sgt. Brian Harris. “Troopers urge you to use extra caution when driving, especially at night, that you are mindful of your speed and please wear your seatbelt.”
At 8:50 p.m., Trooper Carman Lilley responded to a car/deer crash in Hersey. Terry Sandusky, 58, of Mapleton was traveling northbound in a 2010 Ford car on Interstate 95 in Hersey when a deer crossed the road in front of him. Sandusky couldn’t avoid the deer and struck it. Sandusky was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.
At 9:22 p.m., Trooper Andrew Levesque responded to Route 1 in Connor for a car/moose crash. Stephanie Boisclair, 23, of Rhode Island was traveling northbound in her 1998 Jeep on U.S. Route 1 when a moose entered the roadway. Boisclair couldn’t avoid the moose and struck it.
Boisclair sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash and was transported to Cary Medical Center by Caribou Ambulance. Boisclair was wearing a seatbelt. Levesque was assisted by U.S. Border Patrol at the crash scene.
At 9:35 p.m., Trooper Lilley responded to car/moose crash on Route 11 in Stacyville. Deborah Porter, 55, of Patten was northbound on Route 11 in a 2001 Chrysler car when two moose entered the roadway in front of her. Porter was able to avoid one moose but struck the second one. Porter was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.
At 10:48 p.m., Trooper Chris Cyr responded to a car/moose crash on Route 1 in Frenchville. Leo Bouley, 59, of Fort Kent was driving his 2005 Dodge car on Rt 1 when moose entered roadway in front of him. Bouley couldn’t avoid the moose and struck it, Bouley was not injured in the crash
At 10:55 p.m., Trooper Jill Monahan responded to a crash involving a moose on Route 1 in Bridgewater. Benjamin LeBlanc, 23, of Mapleton was northbound in his 2007 Chevrolet truck when a moose entered the roadway in front of him. LeBlanc was not able to avoid the moose and struck it. LeBlanc was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the crash.
In addition to these crashes, Troopers responded to two other car/moose crashes on the evening of June 6 where the operators struck the moose but luckily were not injured nor did they sustain any reportable damage to their vehicle.
