The Houlton Pioneer Times would like to formally introduce Shelby Hartin, who will be working as a student intern for the newspaper from May until August. Hartin will be assisting our publication with contributions to news reporting, photography, and secretarial work.

“I look forward to gaining experience in the field of journalism and appreciate the opportunity given to me by the Houlton Pioneer Times,” Hartin said.
Hartin will be a third year English and journalism student in the fall at the University of Maine, Orono.

“I recently declared my double major in journalism and contacted the Houlton Pioneer Times in hopes that they would have opportunities for me to gain experience. Thankfully, they were willing to take me on as a student intern. I look forward to assisting the newspaper and the communities it serves in a positive manner while I’m here.”
Hartin, a resident of Crystal, attended Southern Aroostook Community High School where she participated in athletics, music and drama. As a student at the University of Maine, she works as a copyeditor and writer for The Maine Campus and is a founding member of Delta Phi Epsilon sorority. She will also act as an Honors Course Associate in the fall, where she will assist in developing and maintaining a required course for students of the Honors College and will work as a tutor in the Writing Center on campus.
“My hope for the future is to work in publishing, but I intend to gain as much experience as possible in fields related to English and journalism,” Hartin explained.
Hartin’s other interests include collecting and reading classic literature, enjoying the outdoors, and the recently acquired hobby of horseback riding. She has no solid plans as to where she plans to live in the future, or if she would like to stay in Maine.
“I want to travel as much as possible while I can. I plan to study abroad next summer in Ireland, but for now, I will enjoy Maine and all it has to offer,” she said. “I am excited to begin contributing to the Houlton Pioneer Times and learning from its staff as well as the community.”
