The Houlton High School tennis team’s last meet is scheduled for today in Caribou at 3:30 p.m. The Houlton boys are 3-6 on the year and are sitting on the bubble in the 13th position, while the girls are 0-8 and sitting in 15th position in Class C.
The top 13 teams advance to the playoffs in tennis. On Tuesday, May 28, the regional team preliminaries will be played on the home courts of the higher seeded team, while the regional team quarterfinals will be Thursday, May 30, at the home court of the higher seeded team.
Saturday, June 1 is the regional team semifinals and the Eastern Maine finals will be Wednesday, June 5 at the University of Maine Orono.
Last week, the Houlton teams hosted Madawaska in a doubleheader, playing on both the Community Park and Houlton Recreation Center courts.
In the second match, Madawaska edged Houlton, 3-2.
In singles, Ian Lee (M) defeated Josh Sullivan 8-6; Jake Gendreau (M) topped Ethan Nickerson 8-2; and Lucas Grant (H) overtook Ethan Wetmore 9-8 (7-2). In doubles, Aaron Thibeault/Sam Deschenes (M) overpowered Robby Woods/Steven Phillips 8-1, while Chris Crane/Dakota Gramour (H) bested Darin Jandreau/Lucas Gendreau 8-5.
The Owls improved to 7-2, while Houlton slipped to 3-6.
In the first match, the Owls overtook Houlton, 4-1.
In singles, Lee (M) defeated Sullivan 8-4; Gendreau (M) topped Nickerson 8-3; and Wetmore (M) blanked Grant 8-0. In doubles, Thibeault/Deschenes (M) overtook Woods/Phillips 8-1, while Crane/ Gramour (H) bested Jandreau/Deschenes 8-5.
In girls action, Madawaska defeated Houlton in both matches 4-1 and 5-0.
In the second match, June Choi/Madelene Anderson (H) picked up an 8-5 win over Lauren Tingley/Anna Faucher 8-5 for the lone win. In the first match, Choi/Anderson were bested 8-2 by Natalie Cyr/Alison Cyr.
In singles, Caleigh Sullivan fell to Emily Collins twice, 8-1 and 8-0; Lindsey Lavoie (M) defeated Tessa Winship, 8-0 and 8-3; and in the second match, Cassie Nelson (M) blanked Emily Mooers, 8-0, while in the first match, Rikki DeMoranville defeated Mooers, 8-1.
In doubles, Houlton’s Janelle Levesque/Piper Flewelling lost twice to Sarah Ringuette/Roxy Levesque, 8-2 and 8-0.
