10th anniversary of the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery

To the editor:
We are blessed in Aroostook County to have a strong history of men and women stepping up to the plate and serving our country in her armed forces. And as we honor the sacrifices of those who have gone before never to return this Memorial Day let us take a moment to appreciate those sacrifices. One place we can visit to memorialize and honor those sacrifices is the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery in Caribou.

We are very fortunate to have a facility such as this north of Augusta, as it has not always been so. Memorial Day 2013 will mark the 10-year anniversary of this great resting place of our honored heroes. It is a testament to the great stewardship of Harry Hafford and the committee members of the NMVC that they maintain a facility that is at par with Arlington National Cemetery. The drive down the Avenue of Flags alone will raise the hair on the back of any red-blooded American.
I invite any who have never been there to visit and take in the solemn beauty of the grounds. In doing so you will understand and appreciate the true meaning of “Freedom is not Free!”
