100 Years Ago-May 21, 1913

Memorial day events — All members of Addison P. Russell Post G. A. R. will meet on the high school campus, Memorial Day, at 1:30 p.m. The line of march will be formed as follows: Houlton Brass Band, Co. L. S. G. N. M. as escort, G. A. R. veterans, Spanish War veterans, Fire Company, Boy Scouts, public schools and citizens; and march to Monument Park where the regular services will be held. On Sunday, May 25, the Memorial Sermon will be delivered by Rev. H. G. Kennedy at the First Baptist church.

Ludlow locals — The basket social on Friday night for the graduation was well attended and netted $26.00, a good start. Mr. Laurel Borke lost a very fine two-year old colt by being poisoned by paris green. Mrs. Loren Chase returned home from Houlton on Sunday where she had been shopping with her daughter, Mrs. Amos Hemore.

Historic donations  — Mr. Shaw at the Houlton Museum has received two valuable articles during the week. The first is the original list of voters made by Samuel Cook and Leonard Pierce, assessors for the Town of Houlton in 1831. Among the 73 names listed are: are seven Putnams, five Houltons, two Carys, two Cooks and one Shaw. The second is a pine board table made by the Soldiers at the Garrison over 100 years ago donated by Thomas Patrick Tobin, the grandson of Patrick Sweeney.
Houlton’s new modern dairy — Plans are expected to be completed this week by Alan Clark for the erection in Houlton of the Houlton Farms Dairy, which will be a modern milk pasteurization plant to serve local trade. As far as can be determined, this will be the first and only milk pasteurization plant in Aroostook County.

Niftie Fifties bowling champs — The Couples League of Island Fall’s Katahdin Valley Bowling League completed its season Saturday with a covered dish supper at Birch Point Lodge at Pleasant Lake. The Niftie Fifties, awarded trophies as the winning team, include Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Berry, Mr. and Mrs. David Kennard and Mr. and Mrs. John Hulbert.
Astronaut assist — Two area men, serving with the U.S. Navy, were ready to take part in the Atlantic recovery of Astronaut Leroy Gordon Cooper if his 22-hour flight (piloting Project Mercury’s Faith 7 spacecraft) had terminated there. Roger E. Smith, a fireman apprentice and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles I. Smith of Houlton was serving aboard the minesweeper USS Opportune. Theodore F. Brooks, a chief aviation boatswain’s mate and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brooks of Island Falls, was serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp.

Anderson opens dental practice — Dr. Thomas Anderson, DMD, is announcing the opening of his office in early June for the practice of family dentistry. Dr. Anderson plans to continue his practice of preventative dentistry, returning to his hometown of Houlton after nine years of practical general dentistry in Vail, Colo.
In the military — Richard Silliboy of Houlton has enlisted in the Army under the provisions of the Delayed Entry Program. Silliboy is a student at Houlton High School. After graduation he will serve his basic training and advance individual training at Fort Sill, Okla., as a fire support specialist. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Silliboy of Houlton.
