Houlton NHS Year in Review

This year in NHS was quite productive. We, along with our own personal hours of community service, spent a lot of time volunteering around the Houlton area. In December we participated in a District wide community service day.

As NHS members, we helped Houlton Southside Middle School students make paper decorations, many of which they sent to elderly housing in hopes of lifting spirits during the holiday season. Other members accompanied middle school students to the nursing home to visit and deliver the decorations they made.
In March, a few of our members went to the Maine State National Honor Society Conference in Orono with the theme of “Feed the Community, Feed the World.” Groups of students from all over the state were present at the convention. There they listened to a guest speaker talk about the 1999 Columbine Shooting and the importance of making everyday count.
Our members also worked with “Stop Hunger Now” to package over 10,000 meals to help combat world hunger during the convention. Our members look forward to making it a tradition to attend the state convention each year.
In April we inducted 20 new members during our induction ceremony. It has been a great year, and I look forward to seeing what the new members achieve in the years to come. Closing out the year, we sponsored a breakfast for our teachers to show our appreciation for them during Teacher Appreciation Week. What a great year it has been celebrating service, leadership, community, and scholarship within our National Honor Society Chapter!
