Top six seniors recognized at Presque Isle High School

    PRESQUE ISLE – Eric Waddell, principal of Presque Isle High School, is proud to announce the top six seniors who were recognized at their commencement exercise June 6.

Shantelle Cyr

    Ranked first among her classmates at PIHS is Shantelle Cyr, the daughter of Louis Cyr and Kim Cyr. She has been a member of the Civil Rights Team and Varsity Club. A two-year member of the National Honor Society, Cyr served as its vice president her senior year. She also served as Student Council treasurer her junior year and was elected Student Council president her senior year. Cyr was also a member of the girls Varsity Soccer Team and the school’s Volleyball Team. She also received the MPA Principal’s Award for PIHS. At the annual Academic Awards Banquet, Cyr received an Honor Bar to be placed on her previously awarded Academic Letter, a four-year academic honors certificate, a Presidential Honors Award, and was the only student from the Class of 2008 to receive the Academic Honors Ring. Cyr plans to major in physical therapy at Bob Jones University.

Amy Marie Michaud   

    Graduating second in PIHS’ Class of 2008 is Amy Marie Michaud, the daughter of Ronald Michaud and Brenda Tunks. She has been a three-year member of the Destination Imagination Team and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), has participated in the state YMCA Youth in Government program, and has volunteered with the Central Aroostook Mentoring Program. At the annual Academic Awards Banquet, Michaud received a Presidential Honors Award, a four-year academic honors certificate, and an Honor Bar to be placed on her previously earned Academic Letter. This fall, she plans to attend the University of Maine, where she has earned a Distinguished Scholar Award, with a planned major in biology.

Gerard Desjardins 

     Gerard Desjardins, the son of Paul and Norma Desjardins, graduated third among the Class of 2008. During his high school career, Desjardins was a member of several sports teams, including JV and Varsity Soccer, JV Basketball, Track and Field, and Volleyball. He was a member of the Math Team his senior year, a two-year member of National Honor Society and Varsity Club, and was elected to Student Council his senior year and served as the Council’s treasurer. At the annual Academic Awards Banquet, Desjardins received a four-year academic honors certificate, the English Department Award, the Math Department Award, and an Honor Bar to be placed on his previously awarded Academic Letter. He was also recognized as one of only five seniors to receive the Honors 12 Award, awarded to students who have made the commitment of enrolling in and successfully completing what many would describe as the 12 most academically-challenging courses offered at PIHS. Desjardins will attend the University of Maine, where he has earned a Top Scholar Award, and will study Mechanical Engineering.

 Caroline Freeman

     Graduating fourth in the Class of 2008 is Caroline Freeman, the daughter of Kevin and Julie Freeman. She was a member of several sports teams, including Cross Country Running, JV Basketball, and Varsity Softball, all of which she has captained. Her classmates elected her class secretary from her sophomore to her senior years. Freeman also was active in drama, participating in contest play and serving as stage manager for the Shipmates’ Playhouse annual musical production. At this year’s Academic Awards Banquet, Freeman received a four-year academic honors certificate and an Honor Bar to be placed on her previously awarded Academic Letter. This fall, she will attend the University of Maine as a biology major.

 Matthew  Talbot

    Matthew Talbot, the son of Douglas and Theresa Talbot, has graduated fifth in the Class of 2008. Throughout high school, Talbot has been a member of the Golf Team, captaining the team his senior year and winning both All Aroostook and All PVC awards. He was also on the Ice Hockey Team for three years. During his junior year, he was elected to the Student Council and became a member of the Varsity Club. At this year’s Academic Awards Banquet, Talbot received a Presidential Honors Certificate, four-year academic honors certificate, and a Lamp of Learning to be placed on his previously awarded Academic Letter. A member of the National Honor Society, Talbot was also recognized as one of only five seniors to receive the Honors 12 Award, awarded to students who have made the commitment of enrolling in and successfully completing what many would describe as the 12 most academically challenging courses offered at PIHS. This fall, he will attend the University of Rhode Island as a pharmacy major.

 Corey  Park

    Ranked sixth in the Class of 2008 is Corey Park, the son of Jim and Jan Park. He has been involved with several athletic teams, most notably Cross Country Running and Skiing, where he was named to the All Aroostook teams and Track and Field, captaining the team and being named to the PVC second team during his junior year. In 2006 and 2007, he was named to a select team that competed at the Eastern High School Ski Championships. Park also played JV Soccer, serving as captain his freshman and sophomore years. During his junior year, he was inducted into the National Honor Society and was elected its president during his senior year. Park also was recognized as the top science student and was awarded the Bausch and Lomb Science Award. At this year’s Academic Awards Banquet, he received a Presidential Honors Certificate, four-year academic honors certificate, Science Department Award, Lamp of Learning and Honors Bar to be placed on his previously awarded Academic Letter. Park was also recognized as one of only five seniors to receive the Honors 12 Award, awarded to students who have made the commitment of enrolling in and successfully completing what many would describe as the 12 most academically challenging courses offered at PIHS. Park is planning to attend the University of New England in the fall as a pre-med major.
