HOULTON – Lillian Saunders Currie passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the home of her granddaughter, Teresa and Carle Goguen of Houlton. Lillian Kathleen Hawkins Saunders Currie was born Feb. 28, 1920 in Woodstock, NB, Canada to Claude and Alice Finnamore Hawkins. She attended Woodstock schools, graduating from Carlton County Vocational School in1937.
She married Willis Blake Saunders in 1937 in Houlton at the Methodist Church, with Robert (Pete) and Lois Saunders Clark as witnesses. They had five children: Mary Alice Saunders, Richard Blake Saunders, Pamela June Saunders, who died at 7 mos, Kathy Lynn Saunders and Allan Willis Saunders. Willis died at age 45 years.
She married Lloyd Gilbert Currie in 1963. They had one child, Lloyd Anthony Currie.
She was a Sunday school teacher at the Methodist Church for over 50 years, president of the Methodist Woman’s Society for several years, also holding offices in other groups in the church. She had all her children attend church regularly until they graduated from Houlton High School.
She took many college courses, becoming a certified teachers aide, a certified nurses aide, with the pharmacy course which she worked at until she was almost 72 years.
The most important part of her life was her family. She was happiest when surrounded by family, at meals and celebrations. She loved gardening and when she visited family, it was always a tour of the garden to see what was in bloom. She loved music and it was especially important to her that her children take music lessons, usually the piano. She lived with her grandparents as a child and gave them credit for her positive and ambitious attitude.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Pamela at seven months; her parents; husbands, Willis and Lloyd; brothers, Burton and Ronald Hawkins and Robert Jones; and step-father, Manzer Jones.
Surviving are daughter, Mary (Maurice) Callnan; son, Richard (Sandra) Saunders; son, Allan Saunders of Houlton; daughter, Kathy (Richard) Gleason, of Auburn; and son, Lloyd Anthony Currie of Potosi, MO; sisters-in-law, Emma Jean Gustin of Corinna, Gaynelle Hawkins of Woodstock, NB, Verona Jones of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia; nieces and nephews, Norma Clark Davis, Penny Saunders Nevers, Terry Saunders, Robert Clark, Connie Long, Kenneth Hawkins, Kim Hawkins, Terry Hawkins, Janice Hawkins Bull, Roderick Hawkins, Beth Hawkins Tait, Peter Hawkins, Lisa Jones Slauenwhite, Mark Jones, Todd Jones, Shelly Jones Murphy and Angela Jones Hart; grandchildren, Gregory Callnan, Ann Callnan, Teresa Callnan Goguen, Stephen Callnan, Raymond Saunders, Debbie Saunders, Lori Saunders, Wayne Saunders, Karen Gleason Graham, Jill Gleason Sergeant, Ann Gleason Teas, Benjamin Saunders, and Emma Saunders; great-grandchildren, Sonny, Kimberly Brigette, Patrick, Eric, Nichole, Connor, Harrison, Thatcher, Wyatt, Julia, Erik, Tyrell, Francis, Jenna, Bryan, Robert, Chelsie, Sami; great-great grandchildren, Nevaeh, Matthew, and Haidyn. She is also survived by a loving childhood friend, Peggy Hanson of Moncton, NB, Canada.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 12 noon. Services will be held at the Houlton United Methodist Church at 12 noon on Saturday, April 27, 2013, with Rev. Patrice Hardy Goodwin officiating.
