East Grand Adventure Race

Ever thought about taking part in a triathlon but dread the thought of doing the entire course? Entering as a relay team in the open division is a great way to participate in East Grand’s Adventure Race without having to complete in the entire race.

Last year, East Grand High School science teacher David Apgar and his sons Peter and Billy entered as a relay team with David and Billy doing the one-mile compass run and canoeing, while Peter did the mountain biking. During the extra challenge, David and Billy stuck their tomahawks into a wooden target 25 feet away (two tries each) earning 10 minutes off the course time! The trio took first in the open division and second overall!
The 20-mile race includes a one-mile off-trail compass run, nine miles of mountain biking, eight miles of canoeing, climbing wall challenge (only one person per team climbs), and extra tough mudder-style challenges in the field that can shave minutes off your overall course time (last year’s was the tomahawk throw and gravel pit challenge).
Adventure Race divisions are: race in pairs in the high school boys, girls, mixed; adult men, women, mix; Junior/Senior; the open division can be by solo, teams of any size, relay, kayak or canoe and in short, anything that doesn’t fit into the other divisions can compete in the open division.
Entry fee for both races is $20 per person which includes trophies, T-shirts and lunch. More than $1,000 in gift certificates to Ski Rack Sports of Bangor are the prizes for the high school divisions and the juniors in the Junior/Senior division. Proceeds benefit the East Grand outdoor education program.
The event is hosted by the East Grand High School Outdoor Education Program and sponsored in part by First Wind, Woodie Wheaton Land Trust and Ski Rack Sports.
Woodie Wheaton Land Trust officials will be on hand at the lowhead dam in Danforth with a display of wood canvas canoes and a coffee pot warming over an open fire for those interested in stopping by for a visit.
Deadline registration is Friday May 10. For more information and registration form, visit  http://www.eastgrandschool.org/adventure-race or e-mail  dave@canoethewild.com or call Dave Conley at 551-8729.
