Rules of the road — Automobilists as well as drivers of vehicles should keep in mind the recent ordinances adopted by the town. A person turning to the right shall keep as far to the right curb as possible. A person driving a motor-propelled vehicle is prohibited from using his cut out or opening his muffler in the “12 miles an hour” town limits.

Of local interest — Frank R. Smith has a vacuum cleaner to let by the day. Just arrived for McCluskey Bros. Hardware Co., two carloads of light Concord wagons, top carriages and surreys. Ladies can have their shoes shined at the Houlton Shoe Hospital.

New Hodgdon high school — With the new high school building ready for occupancy, this week brings to an end a period of working under difficulties. Feb. 18, 1938, the High School and Grade building was burned. Since that time, high school and junior high have been conducted in the Town Hall, Addington House and M. E. Church vestry; and the primary school in Sunday School rooms of the M. E. Church and the intermediate grades conveyed to Hodgdon Corner.
Profit in porcupines — Porcupine hunting is becoming more and more popular with Sherman Mills residents, and there is little wonder as the annual town reports indicates $197.75 was paid to hunters as bounty on these animals last year. At 25 cents per animal, it would appear that 791 porcupines were harvested.

Defense films for viewing — Senator Edmund S. Muskie with the cooperation of the Department of Defense is making available three films for showing to Maine service clubs, high school classes and other interested civic groups. The three films deal with national defense, the threat of Communism and development of the Polaris missile program.

BS-FromFiles-dc-pt-17DISTRICT KILLED BY TWO VOTES — A capacity crowd filled the Gentile Memorial Building for a special town meeting to determine if Houlton voters favored joining into a school district arrangement with Hammond, Littleton and Monticello. The measure was killed when the town of Littleton voted to oppose the district by a two-vote margin.

At the movies — Films showing at the Temple Theatre this week include “Days of Wine and Roses” with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remmick, “Seven Ways from Sundown” with Audie Murphy and Barry Sullivan, and “Follow the Boys” featuring Connie Francis, Paula Prentiss and Dany Robin.

County’s first 911 — Houlton may become Aroostook County’s first community to offer 911 emergency telephone service. Town councilors Monday night authorized Town Manager R. Lewis Bone to procure the service for the town, and Bone indicated New England Telephone Co. could have lines and equipment installed by 1990, if not sooner.
In the military —Air Force Staff Sgt. Douglas D. Wiggins, son of John and Gwendolyn Wiggins of Houlton, has arrived for duty at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla. His wife Pamela is the daughter of N. James and Peggy Coolong of Houlton. Michael C. Cummings, son of Leigh and Sylvia Cummings of Houlton, has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of technical sergeant.
