HOULTON — Students at Houlton High School were honored last Tuesday evening with the school’s annual Awards Evening for National Honor Society and the Principal’s Award ceremony.
Senior Allyson Carmichael, president of Houlton’s NHS, welcomed audience members and shared a brief history of NHS.

“The National Honors Society was established in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals,” Carmichael said. “Those principals hoped to create an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement and develop the ideals of not only scholarship, but leadership, service and character. Today, the purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate desire to render service; to promote leadership; and to develop good character for students in secondary schools.”
She also offered the following words of wisdom to the incoming class.
“To maintain the NHS’ reputation for excellence takes commitment on the parts of all involved,” she said. “Membership is both an honor and commitment that comes with great responsibility.”    Carmichael also explained what is expected of new members.
“Membership in NHS is a privilege and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership and service,” she explained. “Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue demonstrating these qualities. They are expected to exhibit excellence in academics and leadership; honorable and admirable character; and demonstrate commitment to service.”
