The last time we got together, I told you about a dear little kitty at the shelter, Precious, who was missing one eye, partially blind in the other. I thought she was the sweetest thing I had ever seen and she had a motor on her that just never stopped, purred all day long.

She was black and white, walked with her head tilted to one side, maybe the only way she could see out of her one bad eye, and I am thrilled to tell you that Precious is now living in a new home where she is pampered and loved and will never have to know hardship again.
We are forever grateful to the adoptive family and we are hoping to find another equally wonderful family to come forward and help us place one of our dogs.
His name is Roscoe and he is the sweetest dog, but he has some age to him and he needs a retirement home. No other dogs, no cats, not a lot of stairs, just a nice quiet environment and love. He is a 10-year-old rottie mix, all neutered and up to date on his shots. He did go out to a home, but sometimes things just don’t work out, no matter how hard you try, and poor Roscoe came back.
The family that took him says he is an amazing man with a lot of life yet, he still has a lot of fun filled days ahead of him and he loves his walk. He also enjoys his naps and loves laying on the couch with his head in someone’s lap.
I see on Facebook a lot of times that this family or that family is going to get a new puppy and I think it’s awesome that people are giving homes to needy pets, but please don’t overlook the more mature animals that need homes. They often make the very best pets.
I’ve done both. Cocoa and Rocco were puppies when I got them. I was younger then, and chasing a puppy and cleaning up after them and making sure chewables were out of their reach was an easy chore. Cocoa passed away many years ago, Rocco traveled across the Rainbow Bridge after a long life, and then I adopted Shannon, who gave us 10 wonderful years before succumbing to heart disease. Shannon was a young adult when adopted and I became a convert for adult adoptions. Her sweet soul just oozed gratitude every day we had her, she knew she was rescued, and she made us feel as if our home was the best home she’d ever had.
When Shannon passed it was quite some time before I was ready to fill that void again, I was convinced no other dog could touch my heart the way she did. But as you all know, Scruffy rescued my heart three years ago, another adult adoption, and he has been a Momma’s boy ever since.
If you have a nice quiet home and love big dogs, Roscoe could be just the companion you need and I know he needs you.  Please consider giving this beautiful dog a new home.  Give Heather a call at the shelter at 532-2862 and she’ll go over the details with you, as we are trying to make the perfect match.
Keep watching Houlton Humane Society on Facebook, there are always photos posted of new arrivals, strays that come in, adoption success stories, letters from new parents, photos of many of our friends, including the school groups that come through, information on Heather’s rabbit rescue in case bunnies are your passion, and also a list of needs if you are so inclined to help.  We always need cat litter, laundry soap and canned dog food.
Also consider our “paws it forward” program – if you cannot adopt but would like to help a pet get adopted, you might want to help pay for the spay/neuter surgery as many families can afford to feed and Vet a cat but the first initial cost of spaying might be just a bit much for them and that might be the only reason this kitty or that isn’t adopted.  This is a tremendously successful program and is helping us find even more homes for those in need.
And finally, after a long delay, our new website is up and running, www.houltonhumanesociety.org, designed, developed and donated by Nexus Web Development, you can go right to the website to make donations, learn more about the shelter, see photos of pets and a list of partners who have purchased tiles.  More to come in the future on this site and many thanks to the web designer who volunteered to put this sight together for us.
Many thanks to all our friends who continue to support this effort and have a great week!
