HOULTON, Maine — Love was in the air at First Baptist Church on Court Street last Sunday when the church family was treated to a Valentine Luncheon following morning worship.
This event was the fourth in a series of five events, which began last November to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the church charter officially forming the First Baptist Church of Houlton. Over 60 members and friends walked into the fellowship hall to be greeted and ushered to their seats by four gentlemen complete with bowtie and matching aprons.
The hall was aglow with pink, red and white colors, the hot soups and stews were delicious and the chatter, liberally sprinkled with laughter, was infectious.
The meal was topped off with specialty cheesecakes served on silver trays. A toe tapping rendition of Will the Circle Be Unbroken/Red Wing played by the well known father and son duo of Scott Walker, on piano and his son Benjamin, on violin entertained the guests during desert.
It had been a snowy week, which threatened this luncheon but the hardy souls at First Baptist dug themselves out and were glad they did because the event brought big smiles to all who attended. The final event is the 150th Birthday Banquet March 23, which will see former pastors returning for a visit to help celebrate the church’s long history in Houlton. 150 years is indeed a reason to celebrate.
