Basketball season is midway for most local teams. Other action happening over last week includes the following games:
GHCA 43, Washburn 95 — Monday at the University of Maine Presque Isle, Mitch Worcester’s 21 first-half points propelled the Beavers to the win. He finished with a game-high 36 points.
Washburn led throughout the game, with the scores at the breaks, 24-10; 48-24 and 73-33.
Cameron Bragg added 14 for unbeaten Washburn.
For the Eagles, Deyrell Vargas had 12 points and Aaron Holmes added 10 points. Russell Socoby added nine points and Craig Lincoln chipped in with seven.
GHCA 67, Southern Aroostook 81 — Saturday in Hodgdon, the Warriors broke the game open at halftime with a 34-point lead. Southern Aroostook drained seven 3-pointers in the first half, but the Eagles matched the effort in the second half with eight of their own to cut the lead to nine with two minutes left.
Both teams combined for 18 3-pointers in the contest.
Southern Aroostook led throughout the game, 26-8; 49-15 and 61-46.
Cameron Landry’s 23 points paced Southern Aroostook, while Cody Lassonde added 20 points and Jesse Boulier scored 15.
Socoby’s 23 points — all in the second half — keyed GHCA’s comeback, along with Vargas’ 18.
Southern Aroostook 47, Washburn 64 — At Dyer Brook on Monday, the teams played a close first half with Washburn holding a 25-24 halftime advantage. But then the Beavers outscored the Warriors, 18-12 in the third and 39-23 overall in the second half to take the win.
Nick Bragg led Washburn with 20 points and Worcester tossed in 18, while Cameron Preston chipped in with 10.
Boulier led Southern Aroostook with 15 points and seven rebounds. Will McGary netted 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Kaleb Burpee brought down nine rebounds, as well.
In the junior varsity game, Washburn won 55-47.
Katahdin 61, Ashland 52 — Colton Bivighouse led Katahdin with a game-high 22 points, as the Cougars opened up the third period on a 13-1 run, pushing the lead to 19 points in last Friday’s game in Ashland. The Hornets came back to within 10, but that would be as close as they would get.
Wyatt Morse of Katahdin finished with 19 points, while Gavin Drew added 11.
For Ashland, Tyler Levesque had 14 points and 16 boards, while Cody Blair chipped in with 13 points.
Southern Aroostook 65, Ashland 53 — Monday in Dyer Brook, the contest was close in the first half with Southern Aroostook holding a 24-23 advantage. To start the second half, the Warriors went on a 19-12 scoring run en route to the win.
Landry paced the Warriors with 20 points, while Boulier put in 17 and Trenton Cullinan netted 10. McGary grabbed eight rebounds and Mason Caron recorded five rebounds and blocked four shots.
For Ashland, Blair scored 18 points to lead Ashland.
In the junior varsity game, Southern Aroostook won 58-39.
